“Timeless Elegance”
Reviewed 11 October 2011

We visited French Lick & West Baden resorts to celebrate a friend's Bachelorette weekend. It's the perfect girls getaway!! ..or any other.

We pulled up on a beautiful afternoon and could hear the piano playing across the lot. There are two large balconies on the front of the hotel with substantial seating. As you walk up the grand entrance it's like stepping back in time.

The entry way is exquisite with beautiful marble features and mosaic tile floors. It made me feel like we walked into the Titanic. The rooms themselves are quite large (given the historic nature of the place) and very well furnished. The bathrooms were super nice with double sinks.

We had dinner at West Baden and the shuttle service was great, they run frequently and the drive along the resort is beautiful. It's very easy to navigate between the two properties and the casino.

The surrounding area is also really nice with many places to eat and things to do within walking distances. Overall a wonderful place to stay!

At 3 hours drive from Cincinnati, this is far enough that you feel as though you have been away for a weekend. I love historic hotels and this hotel is definitly that. Most rooms differ from one another and all are well appointed but some are small. The hallways and public areas are spacious and elegant. Many areas have photos from the early twentieth century that enable you to imagine how it must have been. We love the casino because of the large non smoking area. The food overall is very good and there is much to do. It surprised me how much of a family destination this is because of all of the activities. Excellent work-out facilities, spa, and indoor and outdoor pools. There is live music, from hoky tonk piano, barbershop quartets, to jazz at all hours of the day and night and the caliber of musicianship is excellent. (Another surprise since this is not very close to where I would think musicians would live.) The people who work here have all been very helpful, cheery and give great customer service. If you go, you must see the West Baden Hotel and you will not forget the experience.

Room Tip: The King rooms are larger.

French Lick resort is beautiful. People were very friendly but it is also the most unorganized place I have ever stayed in. I purchashed the fall package for my family to celebrate my husband's birthday. The package included the room, a cook-out and hayride. When we first arrived at the hotel the desk personal did not have much knowledge of the package. In fact, the concierge did not know a thing about it. The cookout, which was supposed to be by the pool, never took place and noone in Spring 8 where we were to meet was aware of a cookout. We were fed in the bar. We were told the hayride would start at 7:00. We met out front and had to wait 1/2 hour in the chilly air before the wagon ever made it's presence. They said the hayride was to begin at 7:30.The hayride was fun but on the return trip we had to wait quite a long time before we were picked up.The kids were getting pretty antsy by then. I would stay here again but not purchase a package deal.

My husband and I just returned from French Lick. The hotel is really beautiful. Everywhere you look, there are elegant light fixtures, furniture, paintings, etc. They have a very large porch outside with rocking chairs, which is an ideal place to read or just relax. The bed in the room is very comfortable and the room itself is very nice. There are different things to do there, including bowling, swimming, walking around outside.
That said, if you are a gambler, do not go to the casino. It is extremely tight. We do go to many casinos, including Vegas, but will never go to French Lick again. Very seldom do people get a bonus round or hit anything in video poker. Very few people cashed tickets out.
Go to French Lick for a gettaway, but stay away from the casino.

Upon arriving we were met with greetings and service. Check-in was a breeze. Rooms are on the size of a boutique hotel, but remember this resort has been totally updated with the feel of the past kept. There is so much to do for both adults and children, bowling, carriage rides, casino, etc. Free shuttle service takes you to West Baden, don't miss seeing this. We tried every restaurant, there were 3 of us, and the food was good, especially at the 1875, its pricey but good. We also went to nearby caverns via a scenic route. I would recommend this hotel and area for a memorable experience. Service was excellent, friendly and helpful. Oh pets are welcome. I booked thru skyauction.

Room Tip: all the rooms seem to be very similar

I come here every few years for business and/or pleasure. The place had a HUGE overhaul a few years ago when they added the casino & event center. Overall it appears to be upgraded. I don't gamble so the casino does not interest me. New trails added very nice and great tennis and golf facilities. Unfortunately when they renovated they lost a lot of the turn of the century charm. They moved and replaced a great outdoor pool area that has lost most of its charm and they cut down alot of trees which makes the place feel exposed. Room was nice but small also had old style TV. Stay away from the steak house in the hotel. High prices bad service and mediocre food. Oh yeah, my cell phone is a Sprint and I had no cell phone service at all. But the people with iphones had no problem. Overall, still worth the visit.

Room Tip: Don't let them put you on the first floor. Ask for a room overlooking the garden area.

My son and I stayed at French Lick~amazing history was fun to read about, the grounds beautiful~we went horsback riding~saw lots of deer and turtles~had breakfast at West Baden Hotel~WOW! next time we'll stay there~our waiter, Derek, was fantastic. The area is for people looking to relax~the hills in the area are beautiful~would love to see it when the colors are changing.
