Easily accessible on foot or shuttle from downtown hotels, the Eiteljorg is a gem! Except for the Museum of the American Indian in DC, it is the only large museum focusing on American Indians and the art of the American West east of the Mississippi. The permanent galleries contain clothing and cultural artifacts, both old and contemporary, from the 10 major cultural areas of North America. There are also two galleries with art of the West from the 18th to 21st centuries, and two with contemporary Native American art. Children will delight in the 39 foot totem pole and the family activity area that includes a full-size replica of an 1876 stagecoach. They can also wear costumes in that area, and help build a sod house. "Jingle Rails," during the holiday season, is a special treat with trains circling around Indianapolis scenes and iconic sites in the West, all made of natural materials.
