Owner description: Renowned author Kurt Vonnegut took an unflinching look at the world, tempered with a satirical eye and sardonic sense of humor. In honor of his wit and wisdom, the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library champions the literary, artistic and cultural contributions of the late writer, artist, teacher and Indianapolis native Kurt Vonnegut. The library and museum serves as a cultural and educational resource unique to the nation.

My hubby and I were on a road trip through several states, and this library and museum is the sole reason we drove into Indianapolis. We got their early (it doesn't open until 11am), and walked around the downtown area to take in the sights. We were at the museum when the doors were opened and greeted right away. Key items were pointed out as we walked through the small library. The library is very small, only two rooms and a small gift shop area, but I would call it a must-see for Vonnegut fans. There is no admission fee.

I delayed my first visit to the Vonnegut Library, somehow fearing all-knowing and condescending staff. Vonnegut is dear to my heart and I couldn't face being talked down to about him. Well, put away your fears. The curator, Chris, is charming and helpful, and full of entertaining anecdotes. He offers a guided tour as you enter the door, and proceeds to give a comprehensive look into the life of the man, his work, and the memorial that Indianapolis has finally decided he deserves.
There is a little room in which Mr Vonnegut's writing space is recreated, complete with a full library of books by his favorite authors. A desk holds a typewriter just like the one he used, and you can dash out a novel of your own. Entrance is free, membership is a great bargain, and there is a small but thoughtful area with memorabilia to purchase.
I left with new insight into my favorite writer's place in the grand scheme of things. If you like Vonnegut at all, go. You will love it.

Tucked into an historic building and conveniently accessible to downtown Indianapolis stands this quiet little honorarium to one of the 20th Century's great writers. I have included this as a stop on my tour for several interested parties (see Circle City Tours). It is a pleasant surprise for visitors and local residents alike. The staff regale guests with wonderful stories about Kurt Vonnegut and the ample collection of his personal items. And if one is unfamiliar with this author and his works, this is an excellent introduction.

The Vonnegut Library is a trove of artifacts, books and art that draws a fascinating crowd. As one might expect, Vonnegut fans are intelligent and politically passionate, and the conversations you may be privy to are well worth the trip. KV's typewriter, glasses and Pall Malls are on display, as is his Purple Heart. There's also a sizable collection of art influenced by his writing which gives the experience a lovely sense of living history.

One of the best parts of working at the Vonnegut Library is the conversations that take place here. Thanks for visiting and taking the time to write a review!

This museum is only two rooms, but you can spend an hour or two exploring everything. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and there were only a handful of other visitors.

My kids were fascinated by the replica of Kurt's typewriter which they were allowed to type on. However, there isn't a lot available for kids to do besides the typewriter, so I wouldn't plan on bringing them along unless they are a bit older. There is also a large collection of books which you can browse through that are supposed to be influenced by Vonnegut--I was able to find a few books that looked interesting to pick up later.

The guide was very knowledgeable and talked with us for a quite a bit. There was also a computer where you could learn more about Kurt's life and works.

This place is definitely worth a visit if you have read any Vonnegut or just like books.
