“The best of the best.”

ISO is fortunate to be housed in the Hilbert Circle Theater. It is a grand old building and the orchestra is just the right complement. Do yourself a favor and try one of their many shows.

“Always 1st rate.”
Reviewed 5 April 2014 via mobile

I have seen several shows there, that are wonderful. No "bad seats" so take anything available for popular shows. Parking is easy right behind theater. Great place for an evening out. Cocktails are available in lobby.

“Compares well with the "big city" orchestras”
Reviewed 31 March 2014

Like many other arts organizations, the ISO has had financial travails in the past few years. There is, however, strong support from individual donors, philanthropists and corporations throughout the state. Having the world renowned Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University so near has supplemented its support as well as provided stellar musicians both for the orchestra and for individual performances. The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir is a superb enhancement, usually participating in two concerts a year. Also, the Indianapolis Childrens Choir has 3 or 4 ensembles which can provide excellent young musicians for special performances. The musicians are marvelous and the basis of the orchestra's reputation. The current conductor, Krzyfztof Urbanski, is young and relates well with the musiciana and the audience. My favorite all-time conductor is Raymond Leppard, who still conducts Classical Christmas annually. There is a pops series which runs concurrently with the Orchestra season. In summer, the venue moves to Connor Prairie northeast of Indianapolis. People bring lawn chairs or blankets and meals from carryout to elaborate dinners with white tablecloths, candlabra and champagne. Every December is Yuletide Celebration which, although geared toward youth, brings delight to all generations. Many concerts feature top world performers such as Andre Watts, Yo Yo Ma, Garrick Ohlsson, Jaime Laredo and Sharon Isbin. Joshus Bell is a favorite as he grew up in Bloomington, went to music school and is now on the faculty there. The programs are varied from classics to modern and romantic. Whatever the genre, they're alway good. The hall is the 1920's Circle Theatre in the center of town. It has been beautifully restored and adds to the elegance of the music. Make sure to put it on your list of must-sees when you're in Indy for vacation, business, sports events or conventions. You'll be glad you did.

“Beautiful music in beautiful venue”
Reviewed 20 March 2014

First, let me say that orchestral music is not my favorite; however, we were visiting Indianapolis and were fortunate enough to be there when the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra had a concert. I'm glad we went to the concert. The ISO's home is the Hilbert Circle Theatre, a beautiful venue built in 1916. The seats in the hall are very comfortable (something that is not the case in many halls across the country of a similar age). Watching the ISO's music director and conductor Krzysztof Urbanski conduct the orchestra was highly entertaining - he has great artistry and emotion. The ISO performance was the most enjoyable orchestral concert I have attended in a long time. The music, "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini" and "Suite from The Firebird" was beautifully played. The ISO musicians seemed to enjoy playing together and to take pride in playing well.
And, after the concert, they had music and complementary beer in the lobby from local brewery Sun King Brewing. If you're visiting Indianapolis and are looking for a cultural evening, check out the ISO.
