“A peaceful getaway”
Reviewed 6 December 2009

It was our first time staying at a B&B, and I had high expectations that I wasn't sure this place could meet. We were impressed at the low rate for our room on a weekday; it was the lowest rate for a B&B in the area. When we pulled in and saw the beautiful farmhouse and were greeted by Claudia as if we were a part of the family, I knew that we were in for a treat. She showed us to our room, gave us a tour of the house, and asked when we would like to eat breakfast in the morning. We explored the grounds with the bikes that are conveniently provided, checked out the outdoor shower, and when we came back in the evening she had cookies and tea set out in the kitchen! The room was romantic, and breakfast was gourmet. Its close to the New Buffalo beach which is were we spent most of our time. We know this will be an annual getaway!

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at Tryon Farm Guest House for our anniversary. It is a reasonable drive from Chicago and close to New Buffalo and the "Harbor Country" area. The proprietor was very nice, welcoming, and informative. We really enjoyed the history surrounding the farm and the new eco-housing development on the property. It was very enjoyable to walk and bike on the grounds. We enjoyed looking at the eco-homes and exploring the different landscapes. The owner gave good recommendations for dining and things to do in the area. Breakfasts were good but not the best we've had at bed and breakfasts. Chocolate chip cookies were great!

The Tryon Farm Guest House B&B is a very solid choice for those looking for a relaxing weekend getaway. Approximately an hour from Chicago and just a short drive away from the Indiana Dunes and downtown Michigan City, the B&B can tout a very accessible location as a prime draw. But even with the close access to such urban locales, the Guest House has a decidely, tucked away, rural feel to it. One can spend time walking along a series of nature trails dotted around the property or choose to spend time reading a book on a comfy hammock located in the front yard. Interior comforts include simple but neat guest rooms, a living room with a large selection of DVD movies and an expansive (and impeccably clean) attic fun for exploring.

Claudia is the very courteous and helpful owner of the property. She cooks a great breakfast and is very helpful in providing recommendations for sightseeing in the area.

Overall, this is a great choice for anyone seeking reprieve from the busyness of life.

We stayed a couple of nights to celebrate my birthday and we were completely charmed by Tryon Farm. We especially enjoyed being surrounded by nature and leaving behind the busy outside world. There was a small, discreet flat-screen t.v. in our room, but we never turned it on. We loved watching the groundhogs sunning themselves in the morning and the hummingbird sitting on her tiny nest (no larger than a golf ball) in the front yard. The trail around the pond is beautiful, but beware: wear insect repellent! The outdoor shower is even better than it sounds. Our breakfasts were very tasty, and Claudia was very gracious and helpful. It was so peaceful and quiet that it's hard to believe how close it is to Chicago. We loved it and can't wait to go back.

We chose the Tryon Farm Guest House for a family reunion, and it was everything we had hoped it would be. First, the basics: rooms are attractive, everything was immaculately clean, and Claudia's breakfasts were a gourmet treat -- a different menu each of three days. To this add extraordinary service, from special diet issues to the fact that Claudia remembered each of our names (all six of us) from the first introduction. She also gave us super recommendations for dinner places which saved us a great deal of frustration. There's a dedicated refrigerator and microwave for guests to use. The house, a century-old farm house about fifteen minutes from Michigan City proper, is one of those places that intrigues you from the highway, and every part of it is open to guests -- guest rooms (all on the second floor), dining room, one cozy common room with a couch and chairs, another with a computer for guests to use (plus there is WiFI throughout the house), the attic, and even the tower. (These last two are designated as the Attic Adventure Area; the attic has a hammock that would be great to lie in while reading with rain pounding on the roof, and windows in the tower provide a swell look-out for marauding bands of chickens and bunnies. Luckily there were none during our stay.) Many guests enjoy the outdoor treehouse-like bathtub and shower perched at the landing of an outdoor access stair, although none of our party used it.

The house is at the front of a large preserve dedicated to sustainable living which had been a dairy farm. It is close to the road, but the road is not busy enough to be distracting. Going back through a wooded area brings you to some private homes of striking design, but you will have to walk to see them as they are not visible from the B&B. Apply plenty of mosquito repellent before making this walk.

We had intended to spend our time roughly divided between seeing the Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan, and simply enjoying each other's company in the house, and Tryon Farm was the perfect place for that with its comfy front parlor and luxuriant front porch with plenty of chairs of all descriptions plus croquet, badminton, an outdoor hammock, and lawn chairs scattered everywhere.

Was there anything I didn't like? Well OK, one thing. I'm a croquet fanatic and the lawn is simply too bumpy for a proper game. It's a farm! One plays farm croquet.

My wife read this and wondered if Claudia was paying me a retainer. She's not. In case it's not clear, I highly recommend this place.

What a surprise to find at the last minute such an outstanding value so close to Chicago. A very well done conversion of this charming, century-old, brick farmhouse into a family-friendly and pet-friendly B&B is enhanced by the surrounding 170 acre farm with its forests, meadows, footpaths, barns, and the organically raised chickens that provide fresh eggs for Claudia's gourmet breakfasts. The chickens are just a hint, though, of the most ecology-minded planned community of totally green architecture homes grouped into small settlements nestled in various places on the farm. My wife and I have been doing January B&B trips to Indiana and Michingan for about 20 years. This was truly one that we will remember and come back for. THis is not a luxury spa, but it is soulfully rich - a place to be centered and connnected to the earth, to God, and to each other. Highly recommended. Bring your kids, grandkids, and pets.

  • Liked — Rustic, no pretense, quiet, ecology minded, nearness to Chicago.
  • Disliked — Nothing really.

My husband and I travel very frequently and stay in B&B's instead of hotels. This B&B is very conveniently located when traveling through Chicago. It is immaculately clean, and the beds are comfortable. Nice touches everywhere that felt like visiting Grandma on the farm as a child. It is also priced right. I could never choose to stay in a motel when I can stay in a wonderful place like this.
