My husband and I were lucky enough to stay with Maureen and Brian last week at their beautiful home after the hard rigours of the Milford track. I had carefully researched where to stay, and when we drove up the long drive past little Mt Rosa and the vines to the lodge, the mood was certainly set for a wonderful few days to come. We were not disappointed!
Maureen and Brian are warm, lovely people, and they do us a great service by opening up their stunning home and views of the Gibbston valley to us travellers. We stayed in the Mt Rosa suite, and the room was beautifully appointed and luxurious, with great views to the blossoming cherry trees and hillsides (some crowned with snow) down the valley. There was a cheeseboard with gluten-free crackers and relish to greet our arrival, which was a great treat for me, being gluten-intolerant. I must also recommend Brian's pinot noir, which my husband heartily approved of, and I agree!
For the three days we were there, Brian and Maureen took good care of us, and treated us to lovely (and filling!) breakfasts. Look out for Maureen's delicious yoghurt, and the good fare they serve up, including eggs, bacon, cereal and toast (including the best gluten-free bread I have ever had), and mushrooms. It will start your day very well indeed. Their knowledge of the region is also impeccable, and they have many tips about restaurants, wineries and the local area that will help in guiding you about where (and what) you want to do while you are staying in Queenstown. I must also mention that Maureen's dinners are divine, and my husband and I are still hotly talking about the incredible whitebait fritters that she served up on our last night there (please, Maureen, can I have the recipe...?) If only they were so readily available in Australia...
Staying at Mt Rosa Lodge is an amazing experience, and I can't talk highly enough of Maureen and Brian. I can't wait to come back and experience their lovely welcome again.
