“A real hideaway”
Reviewed 21 January 2014 for a stay in December 2013

Kris and Brian are very kind and thoughtful hosts and their "Dune Escape" is a real hideaway with wallabies and other wild life passing through the garden from time to time. The house is tastefully decorated, ecologically sound and equipped with everything you may need during a short visit. Kris and Brian live very close by and are available when the need arises. From the peak of the dune at the end of the garden we had a breathtaking view on the ocean and it is just a minute walk down the steep stairs to the lonesome beach (Emu Bay) which is about 5 km wide. Ideal for swimming and running. Together with our two teenaged kids we spent a wonderful Christmas time at the house. Many thanks again for the little Christmas tree in the living room!

Hi Henrik and family, sorry for the very delayed response, we trust life is going well for you back in Germany :) Thank you so much for your very kind and positive comments in your review, we thoroughly enjoyed adding to your Christmas holiday and are really pleased you appreciated all that we had to offer, including the little Christmas tree. We are so humbled to receive grateful acknowledgement from lovely well travelled people from all over the world such as yourselves. Brian and I continue to walk that lonesome beach every morning and never tire of the beautiful sunrises as your wife experienced too. We hope to perhaps see you again on Kangaroo Island :) Regards Kris and Brian

“A true gem - beautiful, lovely, impecable”
Reviewed 18 December 2013 for a stay in December 2013

Kris and Brian are great and thoughtful communicators and hosts with a lot of taste and sensitivity. Their beachhouse is a beautifully designed, spotless, clean and cosy hide away in the dunes, however only 15 min away from Kingscote for dinner or food shopping. We truly appreciated the relaxing atmosphere inmidst of kangeroos, peacocks and birds. From the dune itself you can oversea all of Emu bay, walk down to one of the nicest beaches - Emu Beach and enjoy very seluded walks. A wonderful base within 1.5 hours of the Ferry terminal of Kangeroo Island (KI) for exciting exploration of this special Island. Do not forget to taste the unforgettable KI honey, one of the nice surprises of Kris and Brian for breakfast.

“Fantastic beautiful home beautiful place”
Reviewed 12 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

A Dune Escape was a great place to stay. Very comfortable and clean and respected the environment. The owners were really nice to deal with and it was great waking up in the morning and seeing kangaroos bouncing around. The kids really enjoyed it and loved the walk to the beautiful emu bay beach which was just over the dune. At night we would walk around the house looking for kangaroos with a torch.

“Perfect Escape”
Reviewed 12 October 2013 for a stay in September 2013

This property is expertly finished and maintained to the highest standards throughout. Gorgeous interior with possibly the best stocked self-catering kitchen I have ever seen. The building is a simple two bedroom, 1 bathroom eco-house (solar, rainwater etc) and yet it felt like we were staying in a 5 star island retreat. Situated seconds behind a sand dune, offering wonderful views and beach access, this property is certainly setting the bench march for holiday rentals and I would not hesitate to stay here again. Worth every cent. Ample parking and easy to find, this house is located perfectly for couples or families who would like to have a lazy explore of the (often forgotten, but stunning) north coast of K.I. with it's cove beaches and views. (Snellings Beach a favourite!). The hosts Brian and Chris were very friendly when we met them and they obviously have a great deal of experience both with the tourist industry on K.I. and travel in general.

If you want perfect escapism, serenity, quality surroundings, eco-friendly, and the odd wallaby to hop past, then A Dune Escape is your first port of call on K.I.

Highly recommended.

Wow! Thank you David - your amazing review is certainly very much appreciated. We so enjoyed meeting you and your partner and our place obviously struck exactly the chord we are wanting to provide. We sought to attain clean, crisp lines in design, keeping it simple to reflect the beautiful and bountiful nature surrounding, inviting guests to un-plug, layback and relax. You obviously found that synchronisation - Thank you and you are so welcome to return :)
Kind regards Brian and Kris

“A Great Place to Relax and Enjoy KI”
Reviewed 21 September 2013 for a stay in September 2013

We all thorougly enjoyed our stay at 'a dune escape' This was our first visit to KI. Brian and Kris have created an ideal holiday place - the house is amazing, as is the view of the beach from the top of the dune.
We would highly recommend this as place to stay and hope to come back again.

“Beautiful House, Great Location, Terrific Hosts”
Reviewed 5 August 2013 for a stay in May 2013

I can't say enough about how beautiful A Dune Escape was. We were visiting Kangaroo Island for the second time, but this was our first time there with a young child. Our hope was to have a relaxing, quiet place to stay, close to the beach, that would work well with a three-year-old. A Dune Escape ticked every box, and more!

The house is situated just behind a dune overlooking the beach. A minute's walk up the dune, and you're at a sitting area overlooking a stunning beach. The sunrise shots from the dune made the amateur photographer in our family very happy. We were there in the fall, but coming from Vancouver, it felt like summer but without all the crowds -- sunny with temperatures in the 20s, yet not a soul on the beach. Peace, quiet, and beauty!

The house itself was very comfortable, and I loved seeing such a nice accommodation that was entirely off the grid. My husband was perhaps a bit skeptical when I told him, but nothing fell short, including the shower (which is usually his gripe). The kitchen and appliances were top notch (oh, how I love gas stoves), the bedrooms were very comfortable, and the bathroom was also very nicely done. Burning a fire in the stove warmed the house up quickly at night, and was also very cozy. The back patio was a lovely place to sit and enjoy dinner.

My daughter loved the idea of the bunk beds (if in the end she decided not to sleep there -- having the option of a double bed and bunk beds in the second bedroom was great for an indecisive toddler, and would work beautifully for mutliple children). She also thought the wallabies we saw each evening on the road were great fun.

The house is also well situated for groceries, etc. in Kingscote -- far enough away to feel removed from a more active town, but close enough that you could always get whatever you needed. It's also fairly central on the island in general, so the sights on the west side of the island were a bit closer than they would have been had we stayed in some of the more populous areas on the east coast.

Kangaroo Island is beautiful; we have loved both of our visits there, both as a couple and with a child in tow. There's no better place to see wildlife, and to get away and relax in a low-key environment with beautiful beaches. Brian and Kris were wonderful hosts with a lot of suggestions, and very responsive over email (which is a huge help when you're booking across a very large ocean) -- they live there and know the island well. Overall, I just can't say enough about how lovely A Dune Escape was, and I hope we'll have the chance to return sometime soon.
