On a recent visit to Sydney I booked Pilu at short notice for a special family dinner seeking a decent Italian meal. Upon arrival at their lovely sea-side location (a little late to be able to confirm any view) I discovered a wine list with 9 vintages of Sassicaia, 5 of Tignanello and 5 pages of wines from Sardinia! The food was good; light, delicate, balanced and well served, if a little oversold (too many words spoil the presentation of any dish - waiters everywhere take note). But the high point of the dinner was really the wine list with choices for all budgets (though the bias is clearly towards the top end).
The result for us was an enjoyable evening with some lovely wine choices and dishes that measured up to the bottles. Service was friendly and knowledgable, if a little over enthusiastic on dish descriptions (clearly it hit a nerve if I have to mention that twice).
In summary Pilu is easy to recommend for people who care about both wine and food, as long as you accept that you will pay a premium for both the location and the effort the owners are putting into making every aspect of the meal enjoyable.
