“The bare, bare minimum”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2014

The room was clean, beds comfortable, but the fixtures and decor needed updating and maintenance. Mini-fridge choked with frost, wall lamps bent, burned out lights. The shower is 5 feet tall (I'm 6-4), but excellent pressure. Lilliputian bathroom. Not much of a breakfast, I'm afraid.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights while we attended the Iowa State Fair (which was FABULOUS) by the way. We arrived late on both nights and used the hotel only to sleep. It is not fancy nor does it offer many amenities beyond the basics. It is an older property, but the room was clean and the bed satisfactory. We did not use the pool, the guest laundry, or turn on the tv.
Pros: Clean, ok beds, wifi, basic continental breakfast with coffee, working ice machine (we seem to run into a LOT of non-functional ice machines), friendly and easy check-in.
Cons: Refrigerator froze our stuff, pet friendly (not our fav, unless of course we wanted to take OUR dogs .. which we didn't .. lol), older property made for kind of dingy appearance to everything.

Overall, this was not our favorite hotel but it served its purpose and was great value for the price.

This hotel was everything we needed. Got a great welcome, very efficient check in. Good sleep when we wanted and staff did all they could for us. We were there to play golf all over Des Moines with some Iowan friends. There is a restaurant next door with an Irish theme, Brannigans I think the name was. we only ate there once but t was OK, no problems and food good.
Yes if and I hope I do visit Des Moines again I would use the Super 8 again. And it was not far away from Cooneys Tavern.

Room Tip: All not bad.

I stayed at this Hotel two nights last week, and have stayed there for overnights once a year
in July for the past 4 or 5 years. It is an OK place for the Traveler or Business person on
a Budget. The Manager and staff are friendly, and the morning breakfast is OK. They have
a Pool, but it was Closed during my last visit. Had to run the AC a lot due to the Heat, but it
is close to other Restaurants, Shopping, and I-80 at Merle Hay Road exit.

Looking for a quick, inexpensive "basic" place to stay for one night, I had grabbed a coupon from the Iowa border visitor center for this hotel. While the price was good (approx. $50 for the night), the room and hotel is very basic and even dated in places. The bed was acceptable (King) and the facility upkeep decent, but the room carpet was old and worn (wear your shoes/sandals at all times!). The morning continental breakfast was typically sparse, but it got me moving along in the morning. The A/C worked fine, the bath was fine, the room ammenities adequate.

The staff was friendly and the room was quiet - a decent stay for $55 or less.

Room Tip: Check the room and bed before checking in to make sure it works for you.

This was an overnight stop, a little over half way from Colorado Springs to mid-Michigan. We liked that it was a little over half-way through the Des Moines area so we missed most of the morning going to work traffic when we left. The room was comfortable and the pool was nice for this type of a hotel. Good value.

My wife and I stayed on Friday Aug. 5, 2011. We we're traveling home to Michigan and after checking with the AAA Tour Guide decided that this hotel would suffice for a quick overnight stay. We found a coupon in one of those "discount books" at a rest area giving a rate of $52. Upon arrival we were told that the rate didn't apply since it was :fair week" even though the fair didn't start until the following week. After some negotiation the deck clerk agreed to the $52 rate since it was late. We check the room and bed and found everything to be clean. We hit the sack and found the bed to be comfortable but the bedding to smell a little stale. The next morning as we readied ourselves for travel we look a little closer at the room. The mini-fridge seal on the door was black with mold. Probably the reason my wife woke up to a sinus headache. The floor was absolutely filthy, evidenced by the black soles of our socks when we arrived home that evening and removed our shoes after a day driving. The pool was a mysterious murky green, the continental breakfast was a joke, and to our surprise after check out we found the manager had changed our room rate to $62. This wasn't a huge deal except it is dishonest. We would have stayed at the $62 rate but come on, don't cheat me after I leave. The manager never asked how our stay was but, I imagine he didn't care, he had our money and knew chances are we'd never return. The trend towards foreign owners has made overnight travel stays an iffy proposition.
