“A comfortable place in downtown Des Moines”
Reviewed 18 October 2012

I recently spent an evening at the 800 Locust Hotel and Spa and found it to be a very relaxing stay. Check in was actually fun and the staff was engaging and helpful. The room was spacious and had all the ammenities I needed as a business traveler. There was a complimentary breakfast buffet (at least for me) that included personally made omlets and other items one usually gets for $20 at a normal well stocked breakfast buffet. The location was right in the center of downtown and nearby to all of the usual downtown businesses, restaurants, etc. The workout room was very nice featuring stationary cycles and walkers with weights, etc. All in all a very good time there. I would highly recommend this place. I guess it gets a lot of use the the Iowa Caucuses, but who knows???!!!

Room Tip: They are all suites and it always seems to be a good idea to get a higher floor when staying in town...

This hotel was very nice. The lobby and rooms were gorgeous, as you expect in an older hotel. Each room was very unique and comfortable, most with fireplaces. The single elevator was frustrating at times, just don't be in a hurry! The spa and fitness center was AMAZING. The staff was very friendly and helpful at the front desk. The breakfast was good, but understaffed. Housekeeping was slow, but did a good job cleaning. We were there for a wedding and it was great to have everyone in the same hotel and the opportunity to gather in the lobby and Spa for extra time visiting with friends.

Room Tip: Go for the corner suites, they are very roomy and worth it.

You will not lack for space at the Suites. My room was as big as Montana, with clean, dated furniture. The staff were vaguely disinterested for the most part. The breakfast was a high point, with a chef who made custom omelettes for us at no extra charge. The experience was OK but not compelling. There is no restaurant outside breakfast.

I have stayed here twice. Once in a large suite and another time in a regular rooms. Both were great. Beautiful, clean rooms that have great views of the downtown area.

Room Tip: There is a great restaurant near the hotel called 801 Steak and Chop shop.

My husband and I booked this hotel for a romantic weekend getaway Easter weekend. Apon arrival there was no bellman which we thought was odd. Valet is $20 a day (not bad at all) however you can just park your car yourself in the same place valet does for free on the weekends. The staff was pleasant while checking in but not very knowledgable or helpful. We stayed in a corner room on the 3rd floor. It was spacious with fireplace and nice bathroom with whirlpool bath and seemed clean. However our room was extremly hot and stuffy. Though the fireplace wasn't on it was giving off alot of heat and was hot to the touch. We put the air on 50 degrees and left the room for dinner for 3 hours expecting when we got back it would be cool but that wasn't the case. We called down to the front desk and the girl at the front came up to look at the fireplace but she didn't know how to fix it. She did offer to move us but it was 10: 30 pm we were all unpacked and we just had our room set up with a romance package so we really didn't want to move.( it was our anniversary) Our room was still as hot as when we first arrived so we had to open the windows. The traffic and the young crowd yelling peeling out in their cars "scooping the loop" as they say there in Des Moines was very loud. We couldn't sleep with all the noise but couldn't sleep with the windows closed either as it was so hot and stuffy we were getting sore throats. Anyways besides that the bedding is not very nice. More like a pair of old drapes from your grandmther's house. Scratchy and uncomfortable. I expected better quality bedding for the price of the room. We had a couples massage the next morning and that was just ok. Not what we are used to. There was no reception area,so you have to wonder around and find your massage room, no transition rooms,no drinks offered and the girls weren't in uniforms they in fact were wearing jeans. It's certainly no JW ! We decided staying another night wasn't worth it to us so we cut our weekend short. While I was checking out and looking over my bill I see charges to our room from the bar that we never went to, an over charge on the room and an over charge on the massages. They did correct two out of the three charges but am waiting for a call back about the other charge. Also I'm waiting for them to fix the charges on our credit card one for $740 and another for $800! That's for one night stay. Needless to say I don't think we'll be back!

Stayed here because other hotels in the area were full and was really disappointed. Service was poor and rooms really outdated.

This place is a wonderful weekend getaway for a special occasion or just to celebrate being a couple. The staff is very helpful when choosing a room - they found that the rate for the room we wanted was actually cheaper on the Romance Package, so we arrived to roses and Champagne in our room - and they are warm and welcoming. With a fireplace corner room view and a 2-person hot tub, this is probably top of the line in one of the rare urban areas of Iowa. Centro is an outstanding restaurant within a block of the hotel, and even with the state wrestling tourney going on, we heard little noise from the street or other rooms. There is a very nice bar off the lobby with excellent mixed drinks and a nice selection of whiskys, and breakfast the next morning is included- omelets and waffles made to order, fresh fruit, the works, once again In very nice restaurant-type setting. While pricey for Des Moines, you definitely get the luxury you pay for in this hotel - we go back at least once a year for a treat!

Room Tip: We love the top floor corner room, 508
