It has really nice landscape and a few really nice valleys and hills but the length of the hiking and biking trails are just not that long from 1/2miles to the longest was 3miles. Also for kayaking the creeks you can go on aren’t that long either longest I went on was about a mile if not less but I believe once the highway bridge is done it should get longer, fingers crossed.

I took my mom to Galena, IL for a quick winter getaway. We enjoy outdoorsy activities year round and seek to find local hikes in the areas we visit. The Mines of Spain is a lovely recreational haven that is easy to get to and nicely secluded from the nearby towns. Despite its seclusion, it is conveniently located and very close to Dubuque, IA. It took us less than 10-15 minutes to arrive by car from Dubuque proper.

There were some trailhead toilets available in the parking lot. They were primitive pit toilets and not plumbed. FYI.

The weather was unseasonably warm the first week of December and resulted in heavy fog. It made for dramatic scenery though! I highly recommend the easy (my mom has knee and foot problems) the Horseshoe Canyon hike which is a short, perhaps .75 miles one-way, level trail. It is not a paved and we did come back with mud and twigs caked on the soles of our hiking boots.

Catfish creek is another beautiful area and warrants a visit. We would revisit this park if returning to Dubuque.

So many trails, caves, have to be adventoures and explore off trails. Great place to relax and become one with nature.

PROS: free; beautiful area; ample parking; beautiful views of the Mississippi River.

CONS: can be difficult to find Julien Dubuque’s grave;

TIPS: make sure to disregard the first parking stop with Julien Dubuques foot trail- it entails a lot of stair climbing, uneven terrain and can be difficult for kids and adults that are out of shape.

My advice is to go off path and find your way to the very top of Horseshoe Bluff. Other locations within the park are great too. Forget you are in Iowa and enjoy some of the best that the Driftless Area has to offer. Gorgeous!
