“Great weekend at the Hancock House!”
Reviewed 1 November 2007

We enjoyed our stay at the Hancock House during the middle of October very much. The owners, Chuck and Sue, made everyone feel very much at home and like family. There were numerous repeat guests and the dining table was filled with different people every morning. The rooms were clean and filled period furniture and fixtures. Each room had its own distinct and unique features. The view of downtown Dubuque was wonderful and watching the sun rise over the Illinois side of the river was wonderful. Breakfast was always good and the guests had access to a small kitchen with beverages and snacks as well as a fridge to put leftovers from the fine area restaurants. I would recommend going there to take a relaxing vacation.

This house is a lovely Victorian with period furniture & original wall paintings, woodwork, tile, etc. Add the view & you have a beautiful place to stay. The house is located on the bluff overlooking the city. The innkeepers are friendly & knowledgeable about the Dubuque area. They offer a variety of gratis beverages including soft drinks, tea, coffee, wine & sherry & baked cookies every afternoon. A good breakfast is served on a grand table that can easily seat 12 under a wood-paneled ceiling. We stayed in Mr. Hancock's room which was spacious and had a seating area with windows overlooking the city. A chain toilet & clawfoot tub/shower add to the Victorian ambience. Some rooms have jacuzzis. There are nine rooms to pick from.

At least once and year and often twice (if we can manage it) we hold a writers' retreat at The Hancock House in Dubuque. It's a wonderful place to just go and stay and relax. But it's also a great place to visit with a few like-minded friends because it's warm and comfortable and welcoming and it feels like a home away from home (only a lot nicer than most of our homes probably are!)

Chuck and Susan take time to make everyone of their guests feel specially welcomed and are very helpful when it comes to giving good advice about places to visit and good places to eat. They have given us the run of the place so we could use all the 'living area' as well as the rooms we booked, which have made our retreats even more pleasant. The breakfasts are fantastic, too.

We keep coming back. We've been doing it for at least seven or eight years now. That must tell you something!

It's always beautifully decorated for the Christmas holidays, too. So if you can book a stay between Thanksgiving and Christmas you'll get to see it all decked out in holiday garb!

Our group of ten friends stayed in 6 of the 8 rooms at the Hancock House this past weekend. What a wonderful time! Chuck and Sue are incredibly friendly and helpful hosts. The beautiful Victorian B and B sits atop a high bluff overlooking Dubuque and the Mississippi River.
All of our rooms/suites were immaculate and cozy-- complete with feather comforters and warm bathrobes. There is even a guest kitchen open 24 hours a day, where one can find homemade cookies, popcorn, hot chocolate, tea and coffee. We heard wonderful stories about the house and the hancock family during a delicious group breakfast. I highly recommend this!
