My daughter and I were so impressed by everything the Julien had to offer us, during our stay last week end. From the wonderful staff, to the lovely lobby, to the fabulous room with its plush robes and Aveda hair/body products, to the nice light breakfast that was provided....this place oozes total class. Our 2 1/2 hr drive was totally worth it . We can't wait to go back when the pool and spa are back open!

This the first time we stayed at Hotel Julian. It was wonderful. The hotel was beautiful and very tastefully done. Our room was on the 4th floor. Very clean and came with all the nice personal touches. Great beds and linens.
The hotel was very peaceful and quiet. The staff was very courteous and friendly. Could not have been nicer. Their renovation was a very worthwhile investment. We were glad that we hadn't read any of the reviews before the renovation.

We were lucky enough to get to stay at this hotel the first night it reopened wih freshly remodeled rooms. The rooms are quite beautiful, reminds me of the classy Vegas hotels like the Venetian or Caesars. As of 6/21 when we checked out, the restaurant and pool were not open.

I paid $200 for two nights in a family "suite" (a living room, 2 bathrooms, 2 beds). My primary complaint is that their website makes the rooms look nicer and better than they are. Also, they are too expensive for the quality they provide. Yes, the location is nice...but they're in downtown Dubuque, not downtown Chicago.

I usually like places with a lot of character and I'm more likely to stay at an older hotel or local motel. That is why I picked the Julien and it was okay in that respect, older with history. But driving up it looks condemned, with wood over the lower windows and the front torn up for renovations.

When I approached the front desk the employee gave my friend and I an odd look, instead of warmly greeting us.

Once inside our room we didn't really see a suite, instead there was a tiny, tiny living room with an old couch. The TV was also very small and mounted up high, the living room looked like a shabby dentist's waiting room. Also, the cable was very fuzzy and there were some rolled up fast food wrappers behind the TV. The ceiling consisted of the kind of foam panels you'll find in a lot of office buildings.

We called the front desk and stated our concerns but we were not offered any solution. Since we couldn't cancel the reservation we stayed.

The linens on the bed weren't dirty, but were faded and clearly very old. The beds were barely seperated and there was very little room around the beds, a very cramped room.

The second night we wanted to open some wine but the front desk didn't have a corkscrew, which I thought was very odd for a hotel of this size. A lot of motels I've stayed in have bottleopeners on the walls, they didn't even have that. The lady at the front desk seemed very annoyed when I asked her where I could buy a corkscrew. She seemed surprised that I didn't know my way around town.

I would have been happy to have stayed here if I had paid much, much less.

The Julien Inn closed it's doors on November 18th 2007 to prepare for a complete rebuild of the hotel from the basement to the roof. We will re-open as a brand new yet still historic hotel in the spring of 2009 with fewer but larger rooms and suites, luxurious appointments, stunning ballroom and meeting facilities and a total commitment to excellence in both product and service. We will re-open as the Hotel Julien Dubuque this coming spring with a goal that no guest will have anything less than comfortable surroundings, great food and drink, professionally catered meetings and banquets and the warmest, friendliest and most efficient service available in Iowa. We invite all those who have experienced sub par service and product in the past to take a new look and plan a future visit to the New Hotel Julien Dubuque.
