With the first almost 80 degree weather in Northern Ill in many months my husband and I decided at the last minute to take a drive out to Galena. A few years ago we stayed at the Irish Cottage, and that was nice enough, but nothing really special. I was looking around for other options, considered Eagle Ridge, but then somehow found Hotel Julien, after checking out its website, & reviews here, I knew I wanted to give it a try. It lived up to the ratings and the pictures online.
What a cool older hotel! And such a bargain. We got a HUGT 2 room suite for what it costs at a chain hotel. The bed was very comfortable, as were the chairs and sofa. The only minor complaint is I am a light sleeper and there is a bit of road and train noise (it didn't bother my husband at all).
We drove out from the western suburbs of Chicago, spent the first afternoon in Galena(which is all I really need there in town) and it was at most a 15 minute drive to Dubuque. The next day we did the Mississipi River Road and a the River Bluff Scenic Byway drive.
I don't think I would make Dubuque as a destination, but I certainly would stay at the Hotel Julien again.More
