Wanted a simple, cheap overnight room for an event I'd be attending in the Okoboji lakes area. The Cozy Grove provides that. It was all right for what it was-- a 1960s-built strip motel. Here are the plusses and minuses of my one-queen-bed smoking room (one person):
Plusses: inexpensive-- US $44-and-change (incl. taxes) ; owner and staff really nice and friendly; newer 'fridge and microwave, major furnishings and fixtures-- bed, shower-bath combo, bathroom sink and counter, TV-- were clean and reasonably new; quiet despite having most rooms full and its surroundings (see below); some funky flair from dated items-- 1980s light-blue slimline phone in bathroom, blast-from-the-past coffee mugs, and 1960s era ashtray; for a smoking room, not reeking or discolored; convenience store and fast-food choices within short walks; rooms and grounds maintained sufficiently; view of neighbor's pear trees through window
Minuses: trailer park on the back side, a main road on the other; non-smoking room request not accomodated (but owner was apologetic and ready to refund had I so chosen); desk, walls, heating/cooling systems, shower curtain, shower head, and carpet needed, at minimum, better upkeep; gap at screen door bottom big enough to allow bug entry when main door not shut; flyswatter part of room supplies; lacked typical amenities such as shampoo and coffee; just seven rooms and fairly small adjoining parking (but property has sufficient room for most vehicle types).
Some properties of this type can be wonderful surpises. For the Cozy Grove Motel, I think they try to keep the place a viable local logding option, but are unmotivated to really spruce up the place.
FYI: fairly flexible check-out. Stated time was 10-10:30.
