“Fun and different, cozy and comfortable on the Mississippi River.”

Spouse and I stayed 2 nights on the Sharpe Party Top model houseboat, docked at S&S. Reservations were easy to make and the owner is very conscientious and professional, as well as being very polite and helpful. She is knowledgeable about the area and willing to help make your stay great. Her two loyal and well-behaved pups follow her around the marina and keep a watchful eye on things.

The boat itself was clean and beautiful. It is roomy, especially for a boat, but certain things, like the bedrooms and staircases, are kind of tight.

The kitchen is fairly spacious and well-appointed. There are utensils, stainless cookware, an island, a toaster, a griddle, plates, a storage pantry, coffee and accessories, and plenty of outlets for charging your devices. There is a refrigerator, gas stove, microwave, sink and a bit of counter space.

The shower and bathrooms were spacious and comfortable, not to mention the great view. The front and back deck areas are the perfect place to sit outside and enjoy the beauty of the river. The front deck has a gas grill, table and chairs. The rear deck has a couple chairs, a swim deck with ladder, the A/C unit and a spiral staircase up to the party deck. The outer decks feature ceiling fans, as do most of the inner rooms of the boat.

The upper deck is great! There's a bar up there, a pit couch, chaise lounges, a table and chairs, and a slide. It was nice to sit out there at night and watch the stars, barges and trains go past, while listening to the frogs. The barges and trains go past very close to where you sit! Bring mosquito repellent.

It was very handy to be able to send music to the stereo system from our phones via bluetooth. Speakers are located all over the boat and can be controlled from the panel near the tv or from your smart phone. There is also am/fm and (i think) a cd player.

We used the slide to shoot off the top deck and into the Mississippi River, which is moving past at quite a clip. It was really fun, but I must offer a warning: make sure your rear end, thighs and the slide are nice and wet before you slide so you don't experience slide burn.

The room we slept in had a wonderful view! The headboard was a picture window looking out at one of Iowa's beautiful cliffs towering over the river. The bed was above waist-high but there are stairs on one side of it.

The rocking of the boat was usually gentle, but barges and other passing boats do sometimes cause significant waves. If you are at all prone to motion sickness, I recommend bringing Dramamine. I bought some at the Sinclair convenience store in Lansing, but never ended up needing it. Eventually, I got used to the motion and I was fine.

The town of Lansing is friendly and has everything you'll need. There are several good restaurants, convenience stores and you can get anything else you might need at Horsfalls. I got a wind chime, a glasses case and a couple shirts. They have everything from shoes to luggage to tchotchkes and gardening equipment. Don't miss out on ice cream at The Skinny Dip and be sure to drive over the Mississippi on the scenic bridge. My Hosmer Park is a must-see for its views of the backwaters.

There are many boating options nearby. S&S rents out boats. The nearby Reno Bottom Canoe Trail was enjoyable and I recommend it. The Blue Heron Trail is even closer. The Iowa River has several places to launch. Route 26 has a bike lane.

All in all, we had a great time. The owner made us feel welcome and seemed happy to share her beautiful little part of the world with us. The accommodations are extraordinary and the area is worth visiting.

“Unique way to see the river and relax”

This is a great way to see the Mississippi River and get away. They have various sizes of houseboats depending on your groups size. You must bring in your own groceries and drinks, but the boats have everything you need. We beach the boat and have a great time.
