My golf society has been going to the Bell Inn now for the last 10 years, and we have always found the Hotel and staff to be warm and welcoming. My room looked as if it had been recently renovated , and was very comfortable. One tip, is to book a room at the rear of the Inn ( for a small extra cost) as the front rooms suffer form the early morning traffic that can wake you up !!
The restaurant was excellent as usual , as were the helpful reception and bar staff.
All the pre booked arrangements ran like clockwork and we will be returning again to this lovely part of the world next year.

Room Tip: Book a rear facing room

The hotel is perfectly located to explore New Forest. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. The restaurant is rather expensive but the food is quite nice. A Spanish waiter who served us our breakfast was exceptionally helpful.

We have been Living locally to the bell for the last number of years, in this time we have eaten at alot of the new forests hotels, pubs and restaurants, and have found the bell to be consistly good, compared to it's competion.

Staff have always been polite and friendly, the food has always been cooked from fresh produce.

If your into eating rubbish cheap food at pub chains beware this place is definatley not for you!

My husband and I stayed here for two nights Dinner, B & B with 3 rounds of golf as part of the package. We arrived 2 hours prior to our check-in time but the receptionist was very obliging in establishing whether we could go to our room early or not (which we could) and so that went down very well. We ate in the bar for lunch, which was very tasty, and then breakfast and dinner in their restaurant 'Briscoes' which surpassed any expectations. The food was absolutely delicious and the waiter (Miguel) was exceptionally professional and friendly, without being over familiar. We had a problem with the shower in that it was tepid and underpowered. As soon as I informed Ashleigh on reception, he immediately called in the maintenance man who then reported that the motor pump had broken. Without further ado, we were moved to another room and apologies given. Well done Ashleigh! All staff that we came into contact with were friendly and hospitable. The decor of the bedrooms that we stayed in was perfectly inoffensive, if a little under stylised, but comfortable and clean. All in all, I would say that the golf weekend break offered really good value for money and a great time was had by us both. The golf courses were lovely and the hotel provided easy and comfortable access and amenities for the golfer.

Having spent almost 20 years living in Germany we returned to UK 2 years ago and have struggled to find decent pub food since we returned. We recently moved to Downton and having driven past The Bell Inn several times we decided to give it a go as many places close on a Sunday evening. We could not have been more surprised, the inside is clean and well presented. I am not sure where the reports of miserable staff come from; the guys and gals that served us this evening we charming, helpful and curtious. The food is the best pub food we have found. We shared the soufle starter which was excellent and I had the best plaice I have had in many years, we shared the pub, which although pricey, was excellent (home made delicious ice cream in a brandy snap basket). I have very exacting tastes and unless we just hit lucky tonight ignor the bad reports, its excellent. £63 for pre dinner drinks, 2 glasses of wine, a bottle of water, a shared starter, 2 main courses, a shared pud and a large carafe of coffee is certainly not expensive for the south coast of England. Well worth a visit.

Had driven past here a number of times and it always looked so inviting, so we decided on the spur of the moment to stop for lunch and see what it was like.

The building is lovely and clean with lots of parking available. We were largely ignored by the staff, who were very unfriendly. We ate in the bar, and were 'served' by the most dour faced bunch imaginable. My husband went to order at the bar, and the 3 staff members just stared at him. It was most bizarre. The food was tasty, but the amount of mashed potatoes for the sausage and mash was laughably small.

Overall it was very disappointing. The food was good, if slightly overpriced, but the welcome from the staff and the way we were treated was so awful we won't be returning.

Staff gave attentive service but did not hurry us, the food was in the bar and it was good all-round , my friend chose especially well and had a terrific soufflé starter followed by a lovely looking homemade pie. I will go again and would like to try the restaurant for dinner.

Easy to find just off J1 of the M27, on the way to Bramshaw. Pretty typical New Forest Setting with donkeys ambling past.
