“Good to be back”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014 via mobile

I made a return visit to the Bell with my family, and we all really enjoyed our stay. Sadly it was only an over night stop, but we had a lovely dinner and an excellent breakfast, poached eggs took ages to arrive, but were really nice when they did. No complaints about the rooms all very clean and recently decorated, our room was rather hot and the kitchen extractor noisy and a bit irritating but over all the visit was most enjoyable. Thanks very much

My mother visited a few weeks ago with a coach party on the way to Devon. She was taken with the location and thought it would be nice to return for lunch here on her birthday. My brother lives near Bath and we live near Brighton, so we thought this was a good half way meeting point. Before we went, I checked their website to look at the lunch menu which was comprehensive with a good selection of starters, mains and desserts. We were all looking forward to the day. So last Sunday we set off for the Bell. On our arrival the receptionist told us to go through to the bar where the staff would take care of us. We checked our table booking with the bar man, ordered some drinks and sat down to wait for my brother to arrive. All good so far. We finished our drinks and were shown to our table. There was only about 6 other people in the Bar/ restaurant but we were put on a small table for 4 quite tightly situated between the bar and the front of the pub. Things then took a dive.... we were shown the menu. This was an A4 piece of paper (albeit thick paper). It was dirty and dog eared but worst of all did not match up to the lunch menu advertised on their website. In fact the selection was very poor indeed and the specials board was less than special. When I asked why the menu was different to the web menu I was told that today's menu was new and had only just been launched today. It looked surprisingly well thumbed for a new menu! After much pondering we collectively made the decision to leave. We got the phone number for the Green dragon, the pub opposite, checked they had a table, checked their menu and left. I went to the bar of the Bell to pay for the drinks we had had and was asked by another waiter if there was anything wrong. I explained all of the above and he looked at his colleague behind the bar and said "we need to do something about that menu". All his colleague offered me was "do you want to pay by card or cash" there was no apology he really couldn't care less. Luckily we had a good meal and good customer service from the Green Dragon which must be doing a roaring trade from all the fallout from the Bell.

Dear Jeremy B
Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent visit to the Bell Inn, I am
sorry that you were disappointed with our menu selection, we have changed our Sunday lunch menu to give more choice on a Sunday instead of just a Sunday roast on previous weeks this will be changed on our website.

The Bell Inn is located on a busy road junction in the middle of the New Forest. There are 2 golf courses in the village (one directly behind the hotel and one across the road), some beautiful cottages and, of course, a ready supply of herds of horses, cows and even donkeys. First impressions are admittedly “Oh no, we’re on a busy road” but if you can see past that you should have an enjoyable time in Brook. We certainly had a very pleasant 2 night stay with our dog who thought he had died and gone to heaven in the surrounding forest.
Check in was smooth and effortless. We actually arrived 2 hrs before our appointed check-in time and went straight to our room. We stayed in Room 6 on the ground floor at the rear of the hotel. It was large, light and airy, pleasantly decorated and with an enormous bed! It was technically a disabled access room and our only comment would be that the springs on the built in wardrobe doors made them quite hard to prise open, which would perhaps have been a problem for less robust visitors.
Our dog was greeted with a dog bed, bowl and a packet of goodies. Dogs are allowed throughout the hotel, except for the dining room, and if you are reluctant to leave your canine friend, you can even have breakfast in your room at no additional charge. There were at least 2 other dogs in the hotel at the same time as us and they were all well behaved and looked equally at ease with their surroundings.

The whole hotel looks as if it has been freshly decorated and has a large beer garden. The food was well prepared and very nicely presented. The staff on duty were pleasant and chatty but the hotel did appear to be very under-staffed. We appeared for breakfast at 7.30 am on the first morning and the 2 staff on duty had not finished preparing the dining room. We waited 20 minutes for them to get organised and, to be fair to them, we were given our breakfast from the a la carte menu because the hot buffet area had not been prepared. We ate later on the second morning and the spread was well prepared and stocked – great to have really decent orange juice in a hotel for a change! On the Saturday evening the General Manager and his Assistant appeared to be juggling all the bar/waitress jobs with some help from the Duty Receptionist but we ate in the bar on both nights, and were in no rush, so the lack of staff didn’t detract from our stay.
The walks around the woods surrounding the Forest Golf Course were lovely – and were more than enough to keep us occupied (and our Springer VERY happy) for 3 days.
We will be in the area again at the beginning of August and are seriously considering returning to the Bell for a night.

Given the New Forest setting, and the use of the "Inn" moniker, we were expecting rustic charm. We were wrong, and on first sighting our hearts sank. This hotel is attached to a golf course, and our room overlooked the sizeable and busy car park which serves it (the rooms on the other side overlook the road). So, forget "oldy worldy". However, what we did get was a recently refurbished, clean and well run hotel, which, although a bit "corporate", was well located for walks out and about the New Forest. Our room was large, clean, well appointed and comfortable, the only complaint being some noise from the comings and goings of the car park. The staff, particularly the restaurant manager, were pleasant and engaging. The food was good and decent value, although we did have to contend with large groups in the dining room morning and night - mainly jolly middle-aged male golfing parties - which detracted from the ambience. For this reason, I'm not sure I would rush back (unless I take up golf!), but overall we had a perfectly pleasant couple of nights and the Bell Inn and its staff are to be commended...and on the Amazon deal we had, it was great value.

Room Tip: Car park or road - you decide!

We arrived quite late (8.00), having eaten very little all day and asked for a table in the restaurant to be told that it would be 9.15 when we could eat. We asked if the pub across the road was any good and the answer was yes, so we rang them but they were fully booked. Well, we unpacked came back down stairs and went to the bar to sort out our meal. We were totally ignored by the one barmaid for ten minutes. She wasn't serving anyone else as the bar was fairly empty but she was busying herself with God knows what and not looking in our direction but had clearly seen us. When she finally acknowledged us she informed us that it would not be possible to feed us because they had a big party in. Well, I said, I see that we can order room service until 9.30 so why don't I do that and then bring it down here to one of these empty tables, or better still, you take my room service order and have it brought here. "I don't know if we can do that, it will be my manager that can make that decision, would you like to speak to my manager"? Yes I would, said I. Okay she said and then proceeded to ignore us again, not actually getting the manager. We went back to the unhelpful person on reception and she asked us if we had booked the table? We explained the problem. Okay she said I'll go and sort it out (something she should have done when we arrived). When she came back she said "I didn't get a definitive answer on whether or not Chef can fit you in". At that point we left and went to another local pub that had staff that realised that in order to survive as a business you have to do what it says on the tin and serve food and drinks (with a smile). I would have expected that if a paying guest, actually staying in the hotel, needed feeding, then nothing would be too much trouble instead of which, anything was too much trouble. In the morning we met one of the guests from the big party and they said they waited 45 minutes for coffee at the end of their meal so this team managed to alienate us and the big party they were prioritising over our needs, brilliant! We won't be back and neither will they.

We only had one night at the Bell Inn but loved it. We went on an Amazon deal and enjoyed a nice champagne cream tea on arrival. We upgraded for a small fee to a deluxe room which was very nice and comfortable. The staff were superb and incredibly helpful and friendly and other hotels could learn from this. We ate evening meal and it was very nice, my wife had locally sourced sausages and when we said how nice they were, Adam went off and returned with a printed map showing us where we could go and but them. Breakfast equally good and again staff were excellent. We will definitely be going back.

We stayed here last weekend. The bedroom was pleasant well equipped if slightly on the small side. The bed was very comfortable. The whole hotel had very pleasant decor. The staff were helpful and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the restaurant the first evening and the food was excellent and well presented, the menu could have had a few more things to choose from as on Sunday evening there were no specials I ended up having the same thing another night It is a hotel where a lot of golfers stay as there are two very good courses on the doorstep.I would certainly use this hotel again. A very pleasant stay
