We visited the Welsh malt whisky distillery at Penderyn ( a few miles south of Defynnog ) and needed a place to stay overnight. After reading a number of reviews we decided to stay at The Tanners Arms. Our son had a room at the front of the property, we had a room to the side and at the back of the pub. Both rooms were spotlessly clean and very well appointed with good en suite facilities. A previous review mentioned " a very strong smell of drains and the towels smelt of cooking". Can't argue with their experience, can only say that was certainly not our experience. The bedroom at the rear was a little dark, but that is how the building was built with a fairly small window. whenever that was. The radiator in our bedroom was'nt very hot when we arrived. The owner said that it had probably got a bit of air in the system. The radiator was bled immediately and worked perfectly quickly making the room very cosy. The pub has undergone quite a change since the present owners took over. It was a country pub for locals and good to see that with all the changes that have been made it still is. When we were there ( Saturday 7th December ) the bar was full of locals. We eat in the restaurant on the evening and enjoyed an excellent meal, our breakfast the next morning was also excellent.
The pub boasts an impressive choice of real ales and the owners have managed to achieve the difficult balancing act of modernising and in some ways widening it's appeal without spoiling it for the locals who use the bar and want a decent pint. We would certainly stay there again if we were in the area.
We would also recommend a visit to the distillery at Penderyn. A modern distillery but interesting nonetheless, making excellent malt whisky, plus other spirits ( gin, vodka, etc ).

This hostelry was a great find!
Brenda & Alan run this old PH cum B&B creating a warm welcome.
Good food, real ale & comfortable accommodation which is hard to beat for value.
Brenda pointed us in the right direction concerning the local area, a veritable mine of information.
Excellent choice of local real ales plus is recognised by CAMRA in 2012 & 2013 winning their Silver award.
Their hearty breakfast sets you up for a day of yomping up hill & down Dale!
Would we return, most definitely!
There was the added benefit of Wales v S. Africa (Rugby Union) sausages & chips @ half time in addition to a great atmosphere - Just a pity Wales lost!

After reading reviews on tripadvisor I expected more from The Tanners Arms. We stayed one night. The room was OK, it had a country cottage feel, with a fireplace. However after staying in many hotels I think I expected fluffy towels and white bed linen. The bathroom had a very strong smell of drains and the towels smelt of cooking. Having said that we ate in the Pub restaurant and our meals were very nice indeed. Breakfast was fairly good too. My husband loved the real ales and tried a few!

Room Tip: Check the smell in the bathroom

We stopped here for one night which turned into two when my husband became ill and the landlady was so helpful and considerate that we cannot thank her enough for the care we were given. The whole business seems to run smoothly and everyone is so well looked after that it was no surprise to see the bar and dining area were busy. We would certainly like to return when we are in the area again.

We recently stayed at the Tanners whilst visiting friends in the area. The room was spotlessly clean and quietly tucked away at the back of the pub. The room was well stocked with tea, coffee and water....however, the room was very small, albeit well decorated, but with no space for toiletries etc. The shower was not very powerful and the towels quite small with no bath mat. It was a wet windy afternoon so it would have been nice to find the radiator on, although the owner quickly did sort that when we mentioned it. One of the power sockets in the room was not working so we had to plug the kettle in by the bed!!

Breakfast was excellent but we wouldn't have wanted to stay more than one night as there was very little room to store anything.

I could eulogise about The Tanners Arms till the cows came home, but I’ll keep it short: in a nutshell this little pub/b&b is utterly brilliant. Clean and comfy rooms bursting with character, a large range of quality real ales in superb condition and tasty high quality food (morning and evening) made this a memorable first visit to the Brecon Beacons for us.

The couple who run the place are terrific: friendly, knowledgeable and very keen to help and inform - they’re genuine stars of their profession. Next time we attack the Brecons this will be the only place I ring for accommodation.

We were looking for a pub to enjoy a Sunday Lunch on our last day of our holiday in Wales, where we wouldn't feel out of place in our walking gear, with our large dog in tow. We had just tried a pub down the road in Sennybridge, which was full with people waiting so were very pleased to find The Tanners Arms was ready to welcome us in. We ordered the Roast Beef (could have had Pork or half a Chicken), and this came up beautifully tender, not overdone, with a delicious gravy (they boast that all their roasts have their own gravy)! The roast potatoes were crisp, parsnips sweet, and a huge plateful of vegetables accompanied each person's meal - you won't go away hungry! Sadly, we couldn't try the huge range of beers and ciders as we had a long drive ahead of us. We found the atmosphere relaxed and friendly and would love to come back next time we are in Wales!
