“Unexpected entertainment!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

We booked the Tanner's Arms for Spring Bank holiday Monday while touring the Brecon Beacons. We arrived to a mini beer festival complete with Marcus and his guitar who entertained all afternoon and most of the evening. The food was delicious - lamb shank with the most delicious gravy and sirloin steak cooked to perfection. In the morning the enormous cooked breakfast almost beat both of us but we managed to eat (almost) all of it. Our accommodation was basic but perfectly clean and tidy and unusually was a 2 bedroomed cottage next door to the pub. We were made very welcome and spent an excellent evening with the locals. Hopefully we'll be back next year to sample more beers! A perfect place to stay when visiting the area.

This is my ideal village pub, a fine old building, really friendly welcome, a great choice of real ale and good food at very reasonable prices. All this is a lovely corner of the Brecon Beacons, away from the tourist hotspots.

Booked this at the last minute. I reviewed many others in the area and this one had the best reviews.
I had a warm welcome and was shown to a nice warm and clean room. Well appointed with a good comfy bed, in which I had a great nights sleep. I had room 1 and my only and incredibly minor pint is that the window is small and low down, with not a great view. This did not detract from my stay at all.
The food (pate and steak pie) was excellend and I was well attended by my host. She controlled the place from the front of the house with a level of calm that was truly professional.
I was lucky to be there on a night when Wales played France at the Rugby, the atmosphere was 1st class and the locals were very friendly. (I loved hayden's braces, an will be heading to Abergavenny for some soon).
My pint of Daffodil beer was outstanding! This is a Camera pub and it shows.
In the morning the breakfast was very nice and large. My only complaint was that I would have preferred a "full Welsh", being Welsh, but it did not detract from the taste nor size.

This is an excellent plavce to eat, drin and stay. I will be back.

Thank you all for a great time.

Room Tip: I was very happy with Room one, a double room.

We visited the Welsh malt whisky distillery at Penderyn ( a few miles south of Defynnog ) and needed a place to stay overnight. After reading a number of reviews we decided to stay at The Tanners Arms. Our son had a room at the front of the property, we had a room to the side and at the back of the pub. Both rooms were spotlessly clean and very well appointed with good en suite facilities. A previous review mentioned " a very strong smell of drains and the towels smelt of cooking". Can't argue with their experience, can only say that was certainly not our experience. The bedroom at the rear was a little dark, but that is how the building was built with a fairly small window. whenever that was. The radiator in our bedroom was'nt very hot when we arrived. The owner said that it had probably got a bit of air in the system. The radiator was bled immediately and worked perfectly quickly making the room very cosy. The pub has undergone quite a change since the present owners took over. It was a country pub for locals and good to see that with all the changes that have been made it still is. When we were there ( Saturday 7th December ) the bar was full of locals. We eat in the restaurant on the evening and enjoyed an excellent meal, our breakfast the next morning was also excellent.
The pub boasts an impressive choice of real ales and the owners have managed to achieve the difficult balancing act of modernising and in some ways widening it's appeal without spoiling it for the locals who use the bar and want a decent pint. We would certainly stay there again if we were in the area.
We would also recommend a visit to the distillery at Penderyn. A modern distillery but interesting nonetheless, making excellent malt whisky, plus other spirits ( gin, vodka, etc ).

This hostelry was a great find!
Brenda & Alan run this old PH cum B&B creating a warm welcome.
Good food, real ale & comfortable accommodation which is hard to beat for value.
Brenda pointed us in the right direction concerning the local area, a veritable mine of information.
Excellent choice of local real ales plus is recognised by CAMRA in 2012 & 2013 winning their Silver award.
Their hearty breakfast sets you up for a day of yomping up hill & down Dale!
Would we return, most definitely!
There was the added benefit of Wales v S. Africa (Rugby Union) sausages & chips @ half time in addition to a great atmosphere - Just a pity Wales lost!

After reading reviews on tripadvisor I expected more from The Tanners Arms. We stayed one night. The room was OK, it had a country cottage feel, with a fireplace. However after staying in many hotels I think I expected fluffy towels and white bed linen. The bathroom had a very strong smell of drains and the towels smelt of cooking. Having said that we ate in the Pub restaurant and our meals were very nice indeed. Breakfast was fairly good too. My husband loved the real ales and tried a few!

Room Tip: Check the smell in the bathroom

We stopped here for one night which turned into two when my husband became ill and the landlady was so helpful and considerate that we cannot thank her enough for the care we were given. The whole business seems to run smoothly and everyone is so well looked after that it was no surprise to see the bar and dining area were busy. We would certainly like to return when we are in the area again.
