“Apart from them forgetting about our booking, a beautiful place.”
Reviewed 28 June 2012

We flew with two private planes to Sioma and had arranged for Sioma Camp to pick us up from the runway, situated 6km from the camp. Nobody arrived and after walking to the camp we found out they didn't know we were coming and as a result weren't expecting us. We concluded that the owner, Hans, got his dates wrong. In any case, not a good start if you traveled 1700km to get there. The location of the camp is on a beautiful spot next to the fast flowing Zambezi river. The tents were luckily ready for occupation and the staff went out of their way to make us comfortable with the little resources they had. There basically wasn't any food or drinks available. We were also supposed to do a boat trip up the river to the falls that afternoon, but our guide was away. Cell phone communication is impossible due to the remoteness of the place, but luckily they were able to track him down and he took us to the falls early the next morning. This was an incredible experience and the highlight of the stay. Hopefully more people will be able to experience Sioma Falls and Sioma River Camp now that the Chinese is completing the tar road from Livingstone to Sioma.

Room Tip: There are 4 tents. All 4 of them have a view over the Zambezi river. I guess choose the one undernea...

Sioma Camp is a really well thought out place. The location is perfect as it lies overlooking the river. In low water, there is a huge sandbank of some of the finest sand I have ever seen and cooking a braai on the beach and then sitting by a log fire looking over the water and moonlit bush is remarkable experience.

The accommodation is also great – lovely tented chalets with beds, wooden floors, flushing toilets and hot water gives as much comfort as required. There is also a cheaper campsite, but this also has hot water and similarly idyllic views of the river.
We got a small tent put next to our chalet for the kids to sleep in and the owners a very flexiable about what arrangments you want put in different places.

Dotted all around the large site are lounging chairs just hanging in trees and you can hang out and look at the views for hours.

There is a generator in the evenings with a few lights around the site and in the chalets, but there is no noise as it well situated over the other side of the site.

The owner, Hans, is remarkably friendly and will organise whatever you want. Boat trips to the fall at Sioma are not to be missed and we took ours just as the sun was coming down for spectacular views. The safari drive is not so great, as the national park is not well stocked, but you may get lucky. Hans will even charge small electronic appliances for you during the evening if you need it, but there is no mobile signal, so it is a welcome break from disturbances.

There are no shops and no villages even near Sioma Camp, so you do need to bring everything you want with you – if not, the food they prepare is very good and there is a always a supply of cool drinks whenever you need them.

Currently the road from Sesheke is an all-year dirt road of about 115km – about 2 hours drive. Sesheke is only 2 hours from Livingstone on a fast tar highway. Going north from Sioma, the road to Senanga is about 70km on dirt roads. It takes 2.5 hrs usually, but the last 1hour, on the other side of the river, is on the flood plain and so not passable in the rainy season. It is also possible to get direct from Sioma to Kalabo without crossing the river, but our kids enjoyed the rickety pontoon ferry crossing to Senanga. Hans will give you up to date advice if you need it and making a circular tour may also be possible up through Kafue NP depending on the time of year.
