After seeing this place on Country House Rescue years ago I have been longing to visit it as the gardens looked amazing. Found is easier than I expected and was impressed even as we walked towards the entrance/tea room. The house looked amazing from the outside - next time I visit I shall pay to go round the interior. At the tea room a delightful young girl (grand-daughter?) not only took our entrance money but also made us coffee and served us cake in a most delightful and cheerful manner! The gardens were a delight: so many different 'rooms' and all lovingly tended by what seemed to be a family affair - Mrs Robb was still outside gardening in heat-wave conditions! Every single person at Cothay was friendly and welcoming and the whole experience was delightful!

Although we had Sat Nav, AA route finder, and live not far from the area we were still struggling to find it - it is literally a hidden gem! Headed straight for the Tea Room as by this time we were in need of refreshment. Replete with a delightful lunch we set out to explore the Gardens - and what a magical experience. We have visited many gardens but this must rate amongst the finest. Can't wait to re-visit in a different season of the year.

Arrived here late afternoon on way home from Cornwall. Despite fact we had arrived after the 4 30 pm cut off we were offered tea and cakes, which were excellent. We had missed the house tours, but were told not to rush the visit to the garden and take as much time as we needed. A magical experience to explore in the early evening sunshine. The unicorn is bewitching in its room of blue. Each flowering space hedged off by yews has its own charm; all to the backdrop of a wonderful old house lost in time. Yes its not easy to find down the narrow lanes, but that's part of its charm. Toilets a touch rustic.

Yes, this garden could be easier to find but perseverance pays off as this is a truly beautiful place to visit.
The garden is stunning and the surrounding park is teaming with wildlife, and it is likely that you'll end up going around more than once to be able to take it all in. The staff were warm, helpful and very friendly.
A definite must see.

...but be prepared to look bl**dy hard! It;s a well-hidden gem of countless yew-hedged garden rooms encircling a romantically set historic manor. The structure is classical, all yew allees and Greek God ponds. The planting is a mix of calming restraint and blowsy wantonness.
Between Jeckyll's Hestercombe and NT's Knightshayes, this less well-known gem skulks in the Devon countryside just off the M5. We came off at junction 27 and sortied through several lanes wondering if we were on the right route before encountering a brown sign. Come on Devon Council help your visitors; Cothay Manor is about to feature as Thomas Cromwell's home in Wolf Hall. We expected an architectural gem but found a garden delight... eventually!
