“Fine place for a little local history”

Frontier Army Museum

I took my parents here while they were visiting from New York. We learned a few interesting facts and were glad we went. It smells dank and musty, but the pieces were in fine condition. We loved the small but packed gift shop and bought lots of souveniers!

The condition of the Frontier Army Museum has improved vastly in the past several years. The Museum's current exhibits clearly show what life was like in the Frontier Army. There are also excellent depictions of Spanish-American and World War I era army personnel and equipment. The weapons displayed are in great restored condition and range from mountain howitzers to a very cool Gatling Gun. It is a pretty interactive situation as you can get very close to and even touch a lot of the collection. The Museum gift shop is also very good, with a good selection of topical souvenirs, gifts, and books. This is a must see if one is interested in the old west, the westward expansion, or the Army in general. Be sure to visit the Buffalo Soldier Monument which is nearby on post.

Not as interactive as some but we enjoyed it. Also enjoyed looking at the old houses on base.

This is one of the most interesting museums outlining the history of Fort Leavenworth and our western expansion. Also, it has an excellent bookstore run by volunteers. The best thing is that it is free with donations encouraged. Check on hours since they are limited. You will need to have an ID to get on Fort Leavenworth. Third light from main gate turn right and then it is a couple of blocks on the left. Don't miss the Buffalo Soldier Monument on the right after the second light. One of the eight wonders of Kansas.

this museum is well done. it is as described. it has a great collection of horse drawn carriages. it has some cool stuff from the mexican american war as well as artifacts from the lewis and clark era. if in the area it is definitely worth a stop. my one criticism is that the gift shop is weak.
