I've been to the Fort Hays State Historic Site several times, and am always impressed with the history. During my first visit, I was treated to a tour (not sure the cost), but the tour helped explain the different buildings and their purpose.
What I really found interesting were the stories about the "Blue Light Lady". Rumor has it that the ghost of female with a Florence Nightengale-esque story roams around this area at night. Supposedly, the lady's husband was stationed at this fort, and, after a battle with a sickness (malaria, I believe), the husband and several others died. This lady helped out the medical staff during this time. She would carry a blue lantern, and, rumor has it, this blue light can sometimes be seen on the prairie around this fort.
