The 1st Travel Inn is moderately clean with comfortable beds, but has little else to recommend it for the traveler. The rooms are dated, especially regarding the bathroom. We could smell a bit of residual cigarette smoke in our non-smoking room (but thankfully not on the linen), and the bathroom had a faint smell of urine; ughh. We didn't get the wifi password during check-in, only to find the office closed for the night (at 10pm). The price was high for the quality of the room and lack of breakfast. There are no close-by restaurants, although one is available at each of the I-70 exits (each about 3 miles from the hotel). We considered switching motels, but decided to stay as it was late (for Oakley). This was not our happiest night on the road, but the room was passable.

Room Tip: Eat at the restaurant on the exit from I-70, a steak house on the north side, Mittens on the SE.

Night # 2 of our cross country trip from Sedona AZ to Springfield, MA. We chose this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews, as we were looking for cheap, comfortable and clean. 1st Travel Inn scored on all three. The room was decorated like it was back in the 1960s (weird green/turquoise bathroom and ancient telephone and tv) but it was kind of charming. If you are arriving after 7:00 p.m. make sure you eat first - there is nothing open nearby. In fact, we almost drove by the place and that was even with our GPS on - it is kind of in the middle of nowhere. I would definitely return if I was ever staying in Oakley Kansas again but that is doubtful.

Room Tip: If you get a first floor room you can park right in front of your door.

The motel Is not brand new, but the bed is new enough to be good and the place is spotless. Staff was friendly and helpful. The quiet of being away from the Interstate was really nice. Reasonable price for a satisfactory motel. Use the money you save to go for breakfast at the Colonial Steak House--a bargain.

If you are looking for a place that offers a complimentary breakfast or even coffee (before 8am) well, keep looking. When I arrived I saw the coffee pot at the reception counter and I asked the German/Polish manger if she provided something to start the day with, like donuts & coffee and she spoke firmly, "Nothing, but coffee, but coffee only after 8am." Well, that settles that, eh? This motel was built in the early sixties. Our room was clean, having TV, WiFi, Microwave & small fridge but the property offers nothing special in design that says "stay here". Some other reviewers have noticed an odor in their rooms and my wife did too. She tracked it down to the aged, burnt orange crush velvet couch, “kinda a farm yard smell” she said. Bottomline, the price is reasonable enough but the towel are getting thread bare (I could see light through the middle) and that burnt orange couch need to go. Wait, heck, while I am at it, management, put the dang coffee on before 8am!

After 5 years owning the 1st Travel Inn we found out: You can't please everyone. For a discounted rate of $54.00 some guests expect all the amenities a High Dollar Hotel offers. That there is no coffee before 8 am and no breakfast the guest knew before he decided to stay. He even inspected and checked out the room beforehand. So why staying? And why not getting a coffee before leaving at 9:15? The most astonishing fact is that this guest sat apparently naked on the smelling couch and left his fecal marks on it and in the bed linens. $54.00 - 15.00 for a sheet, special cleaning costs and operational costs of 35.00. You make the math. Our linens and towels are from June 2012, we have chosen an economy cotton blend which suits most of our guests fine because their emphasis is on clean and economical.
We are a family owned business and work hard for our guests but we are not able of pampering 24/7.
There are so many choices in NW Kansas. Please choose a High Priced Hotel that suits all your needs and be willing to pay their rates or review an economy motel for what it is.

We were driving through Kansas and needed a place to stay overnight. The reviews about this place were very helpful. It is a clean, quiet old fashioned place with caring owners. We got a senior rate of $57 (cash) for two beds on the first floor, fridge and microwave, plus free wifi. Parking is right in front of your door. There is no breakfast, but there is coffee in the lobby. Jens runs a pleasant, old fashioned place in the towm of Oakley. A nice stop after a long day of driving.

What a great place to stay when it's 103 degrees outside! The pool was small and family-oriented, and the owners gave our daughter a free set of water wings to keep. The wi-fi didn't quite reach our room, but that's OK -- we wanted to be outside the room on chairs in the evening anyway.

Overall, it's a very friendly place, but there was just one thing, and that soured it for me. Let me put it this way: If you are Indian or Pakistani, I'd especially suggest you stay here. That way, you'll have an opportunity to show the owner that you're not as selfish as the owner of this establishment strongly insisted you are.

The conversation was about rumors that some Motel 6s have been known to re-rent reserved rooms at a higher rate, thus stiffing those who reserved the rooms first. I don't know if those rumors are true. But the owner said, 'That's because they're owned by Indians and Pakistanis, who don't give a damn about you.' Not a great way to start our stay here.

Room Tip: Don't expect the wi-fi to reach into your room. Take the laptop outside.

This is an older facility, but it has been remodeled and is lovingly cared for. It is away from the Interstate and pleasantly quiet. The sleeping area had a queen bed, a sofa, TV, a mini microwave and refrigerator, and a dining table. There were two chairs, one at a desk and one at the bathroom vanity. My husband and I found it to be plenty spacious and comfortable. The pool was very clean, attractive, and a good size for swimming. There is coffee in the motel office in the morning (though there is no breakfast served). We thought it an excellent value.
