We stayed here on the recommendation of a friend who works in Yogya and are glad we took her advice. Everything about the place was very pleasant. We had the most basic room available and it was really good value, spacious, clean and right by the garden/ pool area. The Rumah Mertua seems quite small, and doesn't look much from the front, but it is staffed by friendly attentive people, the restaurant and inclusive breakfast are good, welcome drink a nice touch, and transport services excellent. We did not use the spa services so can't comment on them. The only slight issue people might have is the hotel is quite far from the centre of Yogya. For us that wasn't an issue, we used the hotel taxi to get into town, and it does make your stay quite peaceful to be out of the way - so it kind of depends on what you are happy with location wise.

The Central Javanese people are known for their mild-mannerism and abundant hospitality, but this hotel just takes the cake. We were two backpackers a week on the road, tired, dirty, and wet from all the rain in the region at that time. The staff didn't even bat an eye and treated us with the same courtesy most hotel staff would reserve for their most privileged guests. We feel very much at home and well-cared for. The room was well-maintained and very clean, and the shower worked wonderfully. Food was excellent. The next day we went to Prambanan and got soaked from the rain, but we needed to have our clothes dried fast and the hotel's laundry service would take at least overnight. The staff helped iron our clothes dry and politely declined our offer to pay for the service--they were so nice and helpful that we felt extremely rude for not paying them anything.

On the downside, the hotel's pretty much in the middle of nowhere interesting. You would have to take cabs if you wanted to go somewhere fast--fortunately they would help order cabs for you. Other than the location, I honestly can't find anything bad about Rumah Mertua. It's good value for money and I will definitely stay there again when I'm in Yogya.

My girlfriend and I had booked a flight to Yogyakarta for a long week-end away from Singapore. We had read about Borobudur and Pramadan and felt it would be a great get-away. The plan was to spend the first night in Jodja then second night at Borbodur for early morning visit and then back to Jodja for the last night.
I found very good reviews on Rumah Mertua on Trip Advisor and enjoy the pictures on their websites so I booked the first night there. I was a little bit concerned about how far it was from the city centre so I gave myself the ability to book the other night in a place closer to Marlboro. Eventually we loved the place so much that we tried to change our plans (stay all three nights there) but because it was fully booked could only spend night one and three!
This lovely hotel is far from the crowed but a 15 min (if no traffic) taxi ride get you to the city center in no time. This is not a problem as I first tought it was. And once you're at the hotel though you feel so relaxed that it is difficult to get away! We had a deluxe king size room facing the pool the first night. The room is huge and very confortable. You have a small terrasse to take a drink while chatting the night away. The third night we downgrade to the standard room and the only drawback was the small window but still quite some natural light coming in. The size of the room was definitly smaller.
There is a nice pool with long chairs, a couple of small tables in the garden and a nice open space for breakfast and lunch/dinner. Breakfast is included and really yummy - as we were leaving early the last morning they heaven pack it for us. We had one lunch and one dinner there and both were excellent. We also had an hour of javanese body massage and it was great. Service is top-class and all personel very welcoming: you feel at home from the moment you enter!
As previously said: highly recommended if you come to Yogyakarta

We've stayed 10 days in Yogjakarta, avoiding the busy tourist-trail to Bali, traveling around the sultanite by daytrips. Everytime we came back to Rumah Mertua we've felt as coming home, a cosy nest with a very hospitable and genuine atmosphere. Every member of the team worked his/her heart out to give you a tremendous good stay in their hotel and the magic is...it all comes so spontanious and goodhearted.
Yes, it is pricey (there are cheaper options to stay and eat in Yogja)... but it is worth every Rupiah. During our long stay we could not find any flaws... If we ever come back to beautiful Yogja we'll stay again in Rumah Mertuah without any doubts. If we can find a vacancy... because with all these raving reviews it's gonna be a mission impossible...

We spent four nights here in July and thoroughly enjoyed it! As soon as we arrived we felt as if we were in someone's home rather than a hotel - a very welcoming atmosphere. Our second night coincided with the World Football final (Holland versus Spain) and the Dutch owner organised a "party" in the restaurant to watch the match.

The staff were helpful, friendly and efficient: the room clean and spacious: and the pool cool and inviting. We were in the family room (between reception and the dining room) but it was not noisy al all : the one drawback was that it did not have any outside sitting area and because we had heavy net curtains at the windows/door for privacy , the room was somewhat dark.

The restaurant was okay but the menu somewhat linited: breakfast was good and we were even offered American breakfast on our last morning (we left before 5.00 am!!!)

One caveat is the location. It is quiet, in a residential area, outside the noise of the city but there is little in the immediate vicinity. It is ideally placed for trips to Borobudur etc but not so good for trips into the centre of Yogyakarta - it took us less time to reach Borobudur than the town centre.(Traffic was very heavy whenever we went into Yogyakarta)

We did a full day tour arranged by the hotel - excellent: likewise the airport transfers.

Would I stay here again ? Yes, although I would probably also stay a day or two nearer the centre.
