“Excellent Tour”

This tour is well worth the money. Premium bourbon deserves a premium tour. This wasn't the actual distillery but the information and sampling was very very informative.

“Skip it if you don't have time”

This was our least favorite on the trail. It wasn't as pretty as the other distilleries and they do not take you out of the museum area who you can really just read yourself. We took the mini tour so maybe one of the other tours are better? Hope so!

“Tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2013

There are 2 tours...a short half hour tour of the bourbon heritage museum which tracks the history of whiskey/bourbon (includes 1 bourbon tasting at the end) as well as a more in depth tour of the distillery including the Y warehouse where their best bourbons age. Go for the longer hour tour...the cost is $6 per person and well worth the extra price. You have access to the same material as the shorter guided tour anyway.

There are 7 distillery tours currently on the Bourbon Trail. Most of the old distillers are concentrated in Nelson County. The Jim Beam, Heavens Hill and Makers Mark tour are all within 1 line traveling along 35 miles of back roads from Louisville to Loretta and well worth the effort to make all 3. This is the only distillery that produces in each of the 12 months.

Sign up for a passport at your first distillery and get your book stamped. if you visit all 7 they will send you a free T Shirt. However you only need to visit the 3 mentioned above to get a complete feel for the process of commercial distribution, how it's made as well as how small batches are hand crafted as well as see the beautiful old historic buildings of an 1800s distiller (Makers Mark).

The hour long all inclusive tour is recommended for the bourbon enthusiasts. Heavens Hill includes a self-guided museum tour, a short 20 min film, a self-guided tour of an interactive mock borboun distillery, as well as a highly informative tour of the Y Warehouse where 50,000 barrels of their best bourbons age.

Don't knock the barrels of their stands like I did or they will bill you $9,000 for each barrel. Yikes!!! Make sure to spend some time going throuh the interactive model prior to taking the tour. The interactive model is actually well suited for kids and the only instruction you get for in depth knowledge on how it is actually made. However, if you push the same button on the interactive whiny siren model more than 8 times, they politely ask you to stop.

The ware house tour - nothing earth shattering in and of itself - actually gives the guide time to talk about the 800 commercial brands produced here, as well as the history and steps in making bourbon. When you finish you will learn the difference between whiskey and bourbon, how bourbon was used as a form of currency and how it was created as a commercial trading commodity for storing the excess grain produced in the region.

When you walk to the warehouse, notice the black residue seemingly on everything around the warehouse. It is tartula, or distillate that has evaporated from the aging bourbon and condensed and settled on the walls, windows and even plants. Don't try to lick it, as it is a little sour tasting and people give you odd stares.

Tour includes tastes of 2 premium bourbons in their barrel tasting room. Warning: no discounts on pricing various bourbons in their retail store so as not to affect the profitability of local liquor stores....so only buy the special small batch bourbons you can't buy elsewhere or the rare super premium bourbons. And make sure to try the chilled apple orchard bourbon. It is surprisingly fantastic.

And don't hold your open mouth under the spigot like I did or they politely escort you to your car. Even though my tour was cut short, they are polite, well mannered and highly informative. Enjoy!
