“Great Short Getaway!”
Reviewed 19 March 2008

I took my two nephews and niece to the Lake Barkley State Resort Park for the 1st weekend of their spring break. It was a good place for a short trip. We stayed three nights. The first night we stayed at the lodge, which the rooms had been refurbished since the last time we were there. The rooms were small, but comfortable. The next two nights we stayed in one of their two bedroom cottages. We had a view of the woods and the lake. The cottages were very nice, if you are looking for more room. It was very quite, peaceful, and relaxing (the enviornment that is...the kids, well you know how that is!) The rates were very reasonable and there was a lot for the kids to do with the indoor pool, fitness center, racketball court, tennis courts, basketball, and hiking. They all enjoyed it and want to go back sometime soon.

I had great expectations before our stay, but have to rate it below average. The lodge rooms were small when compared to similar priced hotels although the balconey view was good.

The lodge gameroom was very outdated and poorly set-up.

The only meal we had at the lodge was breakfast. The first day we had the buffet whichwas overpriced for what you received. The buffet was very average. The second morning we ordered off the menu and had a better experience. The food was above average and actually cost less.

Our biggest disappointment came when we tried to utilize the very nice indoor recreation facility. The facility boasts a super indoor pool. We planned our afternoon around getting the children some quality pool time only to learn there was a "water exercise class" scheduled right in the middle of the afternoon and we were asked to leave the pool and pool area. The pool closing was not clearly posted and really messed up our afternoon schedule. They need to decide if they are a state park or a YMCA.

I have been to this park on numerous occasions. There are a few nature trails, but this is not a hiking intensive park. If you are fisherman, this is your destination. The problem is: I’m not really a fisherman. In short, this is my sleeping/lazy resort. The Lodge is very clean; some of the rooms have been re-furnished/upgraded. The maids do an excellent job however they might show up at 8:00 AM or 1:00 PM, don’t forget your ‘do not disturb’ sign.
If you are old school, the game room has plenty of classic arcade games that are still a quarter. In fact this is one of the most impressive game rooms in all of the Kentucky State Parks. The campsites are what they are: campsites, nothing special. An indoor pool is available for guests in addition to an outdoor pool. The restaurant is fairly inexpensive, I recommend the strawberry cobbler and roast beef, respectively. This lodge is a rock throw from the Land between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Definitely something for the entire family.

I, too, have visited many of the KY state parks ("America's Best") and rate this one among the finest in many respects. The lodge itself is a work of art and awe-inspiring -- unique and creative design, solid workmanship, and now-updated decor (French Country, no less, with all the requisite granite countertops and ceramic tile floors, which blend in nicely with the vintage wood plank walls); the massive, three-story lobby feels almost like a rustic cathedral. Both pools are also very nice; great to have a choice when the mornings are chilly and the days warm (they were nice enough to leave the outdoor facility open till Oct. 1 -- unheard-of luxury when most pools close after Labor Day). View of the lake, great; entertainment on the pool patio, quaint; nice if you're the type to rent boats. Adequate trails if you like to hike; paved walkway if you just want to stretch your legs; park benches provided for watching the sun set over the water. Dining room was okay; not the greatest in the system. Food was fine, service slow (but, hey, where do you have to go in such a hurry?). I've seen better views of a body of water from other state park dining rooms (ex: Lake Cumberland); this one mostly overlooks gravel rooftops, and that's a shame; some outdoor dining would be nice. But overall a lovely, historic park for a weekend at the lake.

We stayed at Lake Barkley Lodge for a much needed weekend getaway.

The Park is very beautiful and very BIG. The rooms at the lodge are very nice. Tha bathrooms are very large and very nice with granite countertops. The room has a rustic feel to it and the balcony overlooks the lake which is very beautiful.

The staff was not the freindliest I have encountered. The dining room is in need of some real work. The food is quite average. They have buffet available and they have menu items available as well. We had a family of 4 and our average ticket price was $35 to $40 when we all had the buffet. The dining room is very disorganized and seriously understaffed. We waited nearly 45 minutes to be seated because every single table in the dining room was dirty and had not been cleaned. The wait staff, while adequate was not very friendly and willing to help.

I would recommend the lodge to anyone, it is beautiful. I would say to eat elsewhere.

I stay at the lodge at Lake Barkley State Park at least once a year, so I was in for a pleasant surprise when I arrived to find that the rooms had finally been renovated. It looked like some other renovation projects were still underway around the property. The rooms are still the small side, but they're a huge improvement from the way the used to be. The furnishings and decorating now compliment the wood lodge feel of the building, but they're also much more modern and comfortable. The new bathroom design is spacious and spectacular. While there are some nice condos and cabins around the lake area, this is now without a doubt the best hotel to stay at. The park setting is beautiful, the views from the rooms cant be beat, the pools are amazing, and now finally the rooms themselves are excellent. The only thing that still needs to be improved is the food at the lodge restaurant. It seems to be popular and well-liked by those who live in the region, I would disagree. The service is very friendly, but the food itself lacks taste and variety. The buffet itself really did seem like something that might be straight out of a dorm cafeteria at a local college. On the other hand, there's probably not anything better without driving to Murray, Paducah, or Grand Rivers. That being said, the quality and beauty of the hotel and park as well as the friendly service still earns an overall excellent rating from me.

We almost did not come because of the negative 2006 reviews. However, I found out from the reservationist that all the rooms were renovated in the winter of 2006! Bathroom was great including granite counter top, all new furniture, bedding and carpeting. Pool was great with a view of the lake. Buffet food was good. Our stay was most enjoyable!
