“Wonderful escapism”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2014

We were lucky to find ourselves at Belinda Beach Lovely Boutique Hotel and spent 3 nights chilling out off-the-beat-and-track enjoying the superb views. Benny 'The Guru!' provides stimulating conversations and prepares fabulous food and the lack of food options (due to the island being so remote) were never an option for us. Our bungalow was well bulit and had unspoilt sea views. The surroundings are so lush with flora that its like then garden of eden. Upon reviewing other peoples opinions I can only conclude that this hotel isnt for everyone but we found it to be a fantastic place to simply relax on a virgin island (lets face it there arent too many left that are affordable!). Be warned though....the pool water/ shower water must contain iodine as my bikini got stained orange and we did feel that the beach could have been cleared of rubbish that collects in high tide...but that was our only negatives.

A small, hand-crafted resort on its own end of a jewel-like island, its owners, Benny and Belinda, are expert at both engaging you and leaving you alone. They are bilingual in French or English, but their food is blessedly French! Snorkling for our 10 and 8 year olds was initially unrewarding and a bit scary, but then we hit on an underwater paradise, and the kids converted for what will probably be a lifetime. No complaints. The prices struck us as fair for what we got, e.g. fine dining and a view from bed of hibiscus in the morning sun.

Dear William,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review of BelindaBeach.

Our food is definitively based on traditional French recipes but we try to adapt it with Asian tastes. We also have some Asian-style starters and main courses, depending on the market and the balance of the menus over a few days stay. This is what an expert called fusion cuisine.

The place seems perfect for kids, far from any danger, with perfectly well suited activities, either in the nature at day time, or with some games we can organize before or after the dinner.

The whole team appreciates your feedback and we do hope you will return so we may welcome you back.

Kind Regards
Belinda and Benny

I have to agree with the other negative reviews that have been posted about Belinda Beach. It is terribly run down and not worth the expense. In Cambodia, $100/night gets you a premium hotel experience. Instead, we had no power for 2 nights and the 3rd night we had to move to a room that had power but no water (an disappointment given that air-conditioning was a major reason we had chosen the hotel). The pool was not useable and the lounge chairs literally broke beneath us. The "welcome drink" that you are offered upon arrival shows up on your final bill ($5 each!).

The food, prepared by Benny, husband of Belinda, is delicious. Unfortunately, since Benny is both cook and repairman, his attempts to fix the power meant that we had to wait till 9:30pm for our dinner most nights.

Aside from all of these problems, the most disappointing part of our stay at Belinda Beach was the terrible customer service response. We did not have a $100/night experience, and any decent hotel manager would have offered a discount. Instead, we were presented with a full bill with not even a hint of apology for the state of the hotel. It took half an hour of hard and unpleasant bargaining before we were even able to get a 30% discount.

We are expats living long-term in Cambodia and we have stayed at pretty much every nice hotel in the country. I would urge anybody considering a stay at Belinda to look instead at 4 Rivers in Koh Kong, Veranda in Kep, Terres Rouges in Ratanakiri, Nature Lodge in Mondulkiri, La Villa in Battambang, Sambor Village in Kampong Thom, or a multitude of other great hotels in Cambodia as examples of places to stay with similar price points and infinitely better hotel experiences.

Dear Guests,

Thank you for your comments.
We are really disappointed about your experience. A small problem with the generator set was fixed on the day of your arrival but obviously not correctly fixed. A high voltage problem occurred and many of our electric machines stopped: air conditioning, water pump,…

That happened mid of October 2012 and one week later the genset was fully checked and properly maintained.
Everything is up and running correctly ever since.

PS1 the welcome drink is always offered for free. May be you confused with the boat transfer that is $5 per person. You should have asked us about that.

PS2 the pool furniture is new.

Kind Regards,
Benny and all the staff

we spent 4 nights at the Belinda hotel in Koh Sdach. The Hotel is really nice but just overpriced when you think where you are... we spent 150 Usd per night having a mattress on the floor as a 3rd bed.
we felt that the food and the drinks at the restaurant were overpriced too (18 Usd for a 3 simple course, drinks excluded).
The service was just ok, one of the owners, Benny was kind but the other 3 were a bit distant and not to kind.
A part from this we would definitely suggest to visit the island because it is just unspoiled, the fisherman village is the essence of Cambodian people, pure and kind. The children are just looking for friendships, but they will be more than happy to receive school stuff or games.
Get to travel around the archipelago and you will see beautiful desert islands....

Dear Guests,

Thank you for your comments.
First, we are really disappointed that you got the feeling our staff was not very friendly. It is totally unusual and I guess everybody was a little bit tired early January as we were fully booked the last 4 weeks with Christmas and New Year holidays. May be we should not have accepted your last minute reservation with all the guests we had at the same time with you.

About the price, with what hotel(s) of the same category in Cambodia do you compare? Certainly not with another hotel on a Cambodian island as we currently are the only one in this category. If you compare with hotels in the cities on the mainland, there are a few differences about the operating costs.

The lease of such a wonderful location on an island is much more expensive. All food and beverage we can’t find in the village must be transported. Most of all, the price of electricity is the most important expense. In the village, a kilowatt costs 3400 Riel (85 US cents). That is more than 3 times the price anywhere else in Cambodian cities. Unfortunately we are too far from the village and we need our own generator set that costs even more for air conditioning and the swimming pool pumps, 24 hours a day.

About the food, we have made a difficult choice that is one set menu for the dinner with a fine fusion cuisine. This choice has been made to guarantee fresh products, quality and has been approved by a very large majority of our past guests including professional chefs, journalists, travel agents,…
For those who prefer a lower budget, they can choose only the main course, the starter or the dessert or go and have the dinner in the village that is only 10 minutes far from our place with a moto taxi.

We regularly propose promotions that you can check on our web site. We will send you those promotions by email and we hope that we will have the nice surprise to welcome you again in the future.

PS We also appreciated a lot what you did for the children in the village. We love the local people and always try by our own means to help them.

Kind Regards,
Benny and all the staff

First off, be aware that Belinda Beach Lovely Resort is not for everyone. For me, it was the respite I needed between the tourist onslaught of Sihanoukville and the relative chaos of Phnom Penh. I found the owners, Belinda and Benny, and their staff to be welcoming and friendly, without being overly friendly. The resort grounds are a beautiful work in progress with numerous bird species passing through each day. The tastefully decorated rooms are comfortable, though not spacious, which is in keeping with the owner's desire for their customers to enjoy the natural beauty of their corner of Koh Sdach. Outdoor furniture is provided on the patios of each room. The dining area is aimed toward creating a social atmosphere and I was cordially invited to dine with the owners and other guests while making it very clear that it would be fine if I wanted to dine by myself. Belinda Beach does not provide all the amenities one might expect at a similarly priced hotel. Each room has a DVD player with HD screen, WiFi, refrigerator, AC and hot water. Actually, you are paying for the special location of Belinda Beach more than anything else. I am a retired chef and I must comment on the food at the resort. Benny has no formal training in the culinary arts, but he is a creative adept culinarian and all the meals I was served at Belinda Beach were gourmet quality, in my opinion. The emphasis is on local produce and the freshest seafood which is perfect for Koh Sdach's location in the Gulf of Thailand. If your goal is simple relaxation in a quiet, friendly and naturally beautiful setting, then Belinda Beach Lovely Resort will be a great choice. If your goal is to be waited on hand-and-foot Oberoi Grand-style, with all the amenities and lots of menu choices at each meal, then I would suggest you look elsewhere

Room Tip: Numbers 2 or 3 are best.
