“Wedding reception”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2013

From initial booking of our wedding reception the staff were helpful, informative and the flow of ideas between the both of us enabled us to have our perfect wedding reception. With the help of staff and ourselves we complimented the room with many extra features on the table. The room was tastefully laid out and the extra colours gave a soft and friendly feeling. It was a pleasure to have s master of ceremonies to help guide our guests. The staff were friendly, smiling, pleasant and informative about our food as well as giving us a very traditional level of service in an English country house. We all loved the silver cloches with brass knobs. The food was excellent and surpass our expectations and all served excellently.

The staff were able to help with all our ideas and made our wedding day so very memorable as both ourselves and our guests were all very happy.

First and foremost I am surprised this appears on trip advisor as being in Lewes. It is just south of Uckfield and must be at least 5 miles from Lewes. This should be changed.
We lunched there just before Christmas and sadly can't share the enthusiasm of earlier reviewers. Dining off the table d'hôte menu and a majority taking the vegetarian option (which would keep the ingredients cost down) it worked out at nearly £40 per head which included a spritzer, bottle of white wine between 4, and coffee.
We were given some bread which was very nice and bulked the meal up but there was a very small portion of a very moderate chick pea dish and a dessert. My friend said the cod wasn't up to much. We have dined there in the past when the food has been much better and the portions were generous. Overall it was the sort of meal you would expect to find in a vegetarian cafe in the 1970's. Cranks Cook Book?
Service was very good and it's an impressive building but the food needs to be brought up to to the same sort of standard.
Generally not a patch on Newick Park which is nearby but was fully booked on the day we wanted to go.

We had chosen to have Christmas Eve dinner at the hotel as non-residents. From the moment we were welcomed by the staff to the moment we left, the service was attentive yet unobtrusive, to the extent that staff remembered our names throughout the evening even though we were only there for dinner. The Ashdown singers added lovely festive carols to the evening, and the food we were served can only be described as excellent. From the canapes to the dessert via an excellent main course, we could not fault the food at all. Thank you for an enjoyable and relaxing evening. We will be back.

Room Tip: We did not stay.

I've enjoyed many dinners, teas and Sunday lunches here. The menu changes regularly using fresh produce in season. The presentation, quality, and fast all excellent. Ambience first class, as is the service. Grounds lovely for a walk. House decorated for Christmas.

The hotel is a lovely building on the edge of The East Sussex Golf Course ( between holes 9 & 10) which provides a picturesque walk along the pathways . The house, gardens and views are lovely. Our room was called Snowdon which was great - you go through a door and up a staircase to what is effectively a suite with a sitting room, bedroom, large landing and bathroom. The room was well equippped but it was rather disappointing not to have tea and coffee making facilities . Also, my usual pet grievance - no socket within striking distance of the mirror (aaaagh!) so drying my hair was a challenge - AND very annoyingly I had forgotten to take my trusty extension lead which I rarely travel without - a top tip for the girls out there ! The best thing about the room is having no-one overhead - so no disturbance from early risers!
The staff are very friendly and helpful and it has a relaxed grandeur which is enjoyable without being stuffy. We had supper there with friends and the food was very good. We have stayed here several times and always enjoy our visit.

My wife and I have just returned from a three night B & B plus dinner at this fantastic hotel. We loved it, faultless and attentive service, superb meals and a wonderful building in a stunning location. A harpist one afternoon, a pianist on two of the nights, splendid lounge rooms with a crackling log fire for pre dinner drinks and canapes and post dinner coffees and petit fours. Typically English, just as we like it. We have stayed at many hotels here in England and abroad, without question this was the best of the lot. It is worth adding that we didn't venture too far, Brighton on one day, which was forgettable and on the other to the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells, and that was a delight.
Positively, top of the list for another visit.

Room Tip: We had a suite, they are a bit extra but fabulous.

Booked this hotel to attend a surprise birthday party nearby. Arranging an early check in was simplicity itself. On arrival were greeted like returning visitors and immediately offered coffee after our journey. Pleasant surprise was to be upgraded to a better room than had booked. The service was impeccable, breakfast a treat and every member of staff had a smile at all times. The night staff made coffee for my travelling companion who had trouble sleeping after a long journey from Australia. The building is typical of a country house hotel but was warm and welcoming. Would definitely stay again
