We stayed 4 nights at Maya Ubud in August 2014 in a pool side villa.

When we first entered the villa we were met with an offensive musty smell, which dissipated when the doors were left opened, but returned each time the room was shut up for a few hours.

Whilst there we received a number of insect bites. At first we put these down to mosquitos, but later realised they were in fact bed bug bites. Our luggage became infested, and we have since brought the bugs into our home. They are a nightmare to get rid of and costing us hundreds of dollars.

We have since done some research into bed bugs, and now realise that the musty smell which greeted us each time we entered a villa (room 605) was a sign of bedbugs.

Apart from the bugs our stay was very enjoyable. The rooms are starting to show their age - could do with a decor revamp (although maybe a complete burn down and rebuild would be better to get rid of the bugs).

Sad not to be able to finish a great holiday on a more positive note.

Room Tip: Check room for signs of bedbugs before bringing your luggage inside.

Dear Ms. Nicola Frances B,

As mentioned in my earlier correspondence with you, we were very disturbed to learn that you suffered from insect bites of some description during your stay, and extend our sincerest apologies for the discomfort and inconvenience this has caused.

On receipt of your previous notification by e-mail, we immediately made a thorough inspection of the villa you occupied, along with our Executive Housekeeper and pest control contractor. All items of bedding, especially the mattress and bed frame were carefully examined, along with every other item of furniture in the villa. The examination of the mattress revealed not a single mark of any description. We removed the wardrobe, baggage rack and writing desk, and even the skirting around the floor. Every aspect of the villa was checked, but we found no sign nor evidence whatsoever of any bedbug infestation. These little creatures are very difficult to see, but they do leave behind telltale droppings and cast nymphal skins. Our examination of the villa produced no such evidence. The villa was then sealed and cold fogged, which again produced no indication of the presence of bedbugs. We can therefore assure you that this insect was definitely not the cause of your skin irritation.

We have a dedicated team of qualified pest control staff who do all possible on a daily basis to control and treat various areas of the resort. Each room and villa is checked on a regular basis and sprayed on every check out. The entire property is fogged on a weekly basis and each room and villa is sealed and "cold fogged" twice every year. However, as you are undoubtedly aware, in an environment such as this, it is just not possible to eliminate the multitude of insects that abound in such a tropical setting.

The musty smell you detected on entering the villa is caused by the thatched grass roofing, and not by insects. This unfortunately is a comment we from time to time, as some people are quite sensitive to this smell, which can become quite pronounced if there has been rain. Should guests mention this to us during their stay, we provide the room with an ionizer to help alleviate the problem.

Once again we are so sorry for the aggravation you experienced, and again ask that you please accept our sincere apologies, and trust it will not mar your impression of this beautiful island and Maya Ubud.

Best Regards,

Paul Blake

Maya Ubud was the first hotel we stayed at in Bali and where we spent the first 4 nights of our honeymoon.

The villas were very spacious with everything you’d expect from a quality hotel. The bathroom was huge as was the bath. I think they missed a trick by not screening the toilet off. The turndown service was excellent and there was a cake waiting for us on our first night, which was a nice touch.

The hotel’s selling point is the spa hidden away at the end of the hotel grounds, which is apparently the best in town. Although we didn’t try them all, it was probably the best massage we had in Bali.

The only thing that let the hotel down was the size of the main swimming pool and the number of sun loungers, most of which were taken after breakfast. There is a second pool by the spa available for all to use, but both the pool and the loungers are in the shade most of the day.

There is a comedy golf course, I say that because there is 1 tee, 2 holes (on the same green). The gym and studio weren’t busy, which was great as we had the place to ourselves when we did yoga in the morning.

The breakfast buffet was popular with a massive choice. Generally, the food and drink we had was good and the service was excellent (seems to be the Bali standard).

Overall, it was very nice hotel, great facilities especially the spa and in a great location, walking distance from the town centre. All the locals we spoke to endorse the hotel and say it is the best in Ubud. Whilst it was good, it wasn’t as good as the Oberoi at Lombok.

Room Tip: We stayed in 407 which was very quiet and away from the main hotel. If you want a view of the jungle...

We had four nights of our honeymoon here in a room with a pool. The room was excellent, if a little dated, the grounds amazingly well kept and the staff were superb. The two pools mean that there is always a sun lounger free, though the water is icy cold, great for cooling off but on an overcast day a bit chilly. We popped into the spa for a massage and floral bath. This was the most expensive treatment we had in Bali but it was worth it, the massage was really good, the room opens out onto a beautiful river valley and you can sit drinking and eating in a floral bath, post massage, just soaking up the view. We ate in the restaurant one evening and had a mixed experience, mine was really good but my wife's was a bit average. The breakfasts however were very good and we also enjoyed the complimentary afternoon tea and the occasional cocktail. It's a little way out from the town centre, theoretically you could walk it but the roads aren't designed for pedestrians and as a taxi was 50000 (£4) one way it's just easier to go by car (25 mins during 9-6 and about 10 mins late evening) and there's no shortage of taxi's to take you home. The staff from gardeners to reception were friendly, well turned out and very helpful.

We stayed at Maya Ubud for two nights in early August. The resort is beautifully situated and the grounds are immaculate. We stayed in a garden villa, which was private and spacious, but showing its age. The TV console was falling apart and the stereo they offered reminded me of 1985 (no ipod adapter or anything). The pools are amazing, but they too are looking in need of a redo, with some broken tiles and non-working massage jets. The main check-in area had chairs that were as least 15 years old.

Service was all-around great and our bike tour of the nearby rice fields was a highlight of our trip. Be warned, the bike ride is not for the unfit -- lots of up-hill!

Breakfast was fine, with a full spread and lots of coffee flowing.

A lot of reviews here mention that this is a self-contained resort, which is true; however, it felt good to be away from the craziness of Ubud town. Also, folks should just rent motor bikes for 10 USD a day and drive back and forth. It's basically a 5 min ride to town. The hotel shuttle is a total pain (not because of the driver, but the traffic and the fact that it's much easier to get around on motorbike).

I really am speechless! It was a perfect day of relaxation!

Wonderful selection of Spa Treatments and "Flower Bath" is an absolute must! Also their seafood at the near-by restaurant, with spectacular views and sounds of nature, is amazing! That day, I felt like a Queen of Egypt.

5 star service, which is very personal and tailored for your unique needs and wishes. This is my second time in Bali. Visiting Bali for the third time, will be Maya Spa's fault!

When you step onto the grounds of this resort, all the hustle and bustle of Ubud, will be left behind the gates and your soul will be filled with peace and tranquility for a long time to come.

I Highly Recommend it!

We have just had 2 fabulous nights at the Maya. We had a garden villa, which was so wonderfully peaceful and relaxing after all the walking we did around Ubud. The setting was breath-taking!! The staff helpful, the breakfasts excellent - as were the cocktails!

My wife and I went to the Maya Ubud last week for our Honeymoon and it was an amazing place to be. We had the private pool villa and the view was stunning and you really felt close to nature. The private driver (his name was Suyasa) in whom we had for our tours and transport from the airport to the hotel was fantastic and very friendly. The staff and hotel made us feel extremely special and really pushed the boat out because it was our honeymoon.

The spa facilities are great with many choices.

If you looking for a Hotel which is relaxing, welcoming, tranquil, quiet then look no further and go to the Maya Ubud.

There's no doubt my wife and I will definitely go back and the Maya has left us with a very memorable experience.
