My wife & I continued our honeymoon moving from our Seminyak hotel to the central cultural capital residence of the Maya Ubud & Spa. Having seen many pictures of the hotel, read many a hotel review, I have to say this hotel had us excited for our final 3 days in Bali.

En route to Ubud, there is plenty to see, upon reaching the hotel, the drive up to the resort reception is lush with green trees/ bushes. The reception staff greet you with a warm welcome. But a small negative to start, check-in was 2pm, we arrived 1 hour early but had to wait around whilst our room was ready. I understand the check in policy but for the number 1 rated hotel in Bali (read it in a magazine) I just expected better. The hotel itself is immaculate, the grounds & setting down along the river are just beautiful.

Our room was a Garden Villa with Pool, a little thatched roof home for our stay. There was a huge bathroom with big tub, shower & the bonus of an outside shower too. The bed is comfortable, not on the big side. There was a TV, an old sound system & of course the mini-bar. The room has wifi which always comes in handy. It can be a little noisy in the morning, the birds & dogs across the valley begin their morning chorus so expect to be woken if you sleep light. I did manage to make it into the villa pool. It was a little cold as our garden (North facing – ask for a South facing) didn’t see too much sun. It is a plunge pool, so take a dip to freshen up! Once in it is quite refreshing. It can be a little dark at night when walking back to your villa, so mind your step.

Breakfast was included, it was buffet selection. Coffee & Tea served at your request. As it was a buffet some of the food selection is on wrong side of ‘warm’ but there is a chef serving 2 eggs as you like at your request. We ate twice in the restaurant during the evening, both times were buffet, once at the Traditional Balinese evening for which a number of tables were outside in front of the stage where the performance took place. Nice setting. Again, there is a number of buffet options, but there needs to be an improvement in the food temperature. I’ll add also that the restaurant service needs some improvement. On a couple of occasions the staff took our drinks orders but forgot to bring them. I got the feeling from some of the staff, (not all – the young chap in the Bar is very polite & also welcoming), not just the restaurant staff that they were going from the motions during services. For me, service is paramount when you are paying the price per night this hotel charges & great service makes a good hotel a great one. There is some improvement needed.

We also visited the Spa whilst staying here taking advantage of the $20 deduction per person. Certainly a positive, the treatment is fantastic & the location is amazing. My wife & I were led to the private rooms along the river. You can hear the water powering down the river, the birds singing in the trees, it truly was a memorable experience for us both.

There is free shuttle bus from the Hotel to Ubud, take advantage to visit during the allocated times. We ate out one night in Ubud, so paid for the Hotel car to take us & bring us back – 50,000 IDR. There is free yoga sessions every morning, if you are up at 7am. A small 2 hole golf course (actually 1 green with 2 holes).

All in all, the hotel is in a fantastic setting. Don’t expect to go here looking for an all action, people watching, sun-bathing break. It is a relaxed quite resort where service could be improved to keep it’s no.1 status!

Room Tip: Choose a room South Facing for the Sun. Otherwise garden & pool are cold.

I stayed here as part of my honeymoon. The grounds and the hotel in general are exceptional. The sounds of nature really do add to your stay. The pool areas are perfect for relaxation and we both really liked the river cafe (which specialises in health food). Prices of food are more on a par with UK prices which make that very expensive for Bali but the food I thought was very good. As you find with most places in Bali the staff and people in the Ubud are so helpful and so kind. My one annoyance at the hotel was with the room. The room unfortunately smelt damp, I tried to ignore the smell as the room was great but it was difficult to ignore. I asked to move rooms and was met with exactly the same smell. It didn't ruin our stay at all but I expected better.

Stayed here for 2 nights during our honeymoon in July 2014.

The bungalows with private pool are very nice, but we had a north facing garden meaning no sun in our garden... Make sure to check!

As we had bad weather (rain) the hotel lost a lot of it's charm. When we wanted to book bad-weather-activities such as a cooking class, we were told that they there weren't enough participants. No alternatives are offered, which forced us to stay inside our room, or in the restaurant...

Even though the bungalow door was closed, and "do not disturb" sign was out, the hotel staff ringed our doorbell 4 (!!!) times to offer some fresh fruit. Not exactly what you need when you are enjoying cuddle weather during a honeymoon!...

We fled the hotel in the evening to go to Ubud, and not to be depressed in the hotel due to bad weather.

The buffet in the restaurant was much more expensive than other hotels, and the choices were limited. Too much western influence!

Room Tip: Do not book north-facing garden/pool rooms...

We stayed 4 nights at Maya Ubud in August 2014 in a pool side villa.

When we first entered the villa we were met with an offensive musty smell, which dissipated when the doors were left opened, but returned each time the room was shut up for a few hours.

Whilst there we received a number of insect bites. At first we put these down to mosquitos, but later realised they were in fact bed bug bites. Our luggage became infested, and we have since brought the bugs into our home. They are a nightmare to get rid of and costing us hundreds of dollars.

We have since done some research into bed bugs, and now realise that the musty smell which greeted us each time we entered a villa (room 605) was a sign of bedbugs.

Apart from the bugs our stay was very enjoyable. The rooms are starting to show their age - could do with a decor revamp (although maybe a complete burn down and rebuild would be better to get rid of the bugs).

Sad not to be able to finish a great holiday on a more positive note.

Room Tip: Check room for signs of bedbugs before bringing your luggage inside.

Dear Ms. Nicola Frances B,

As mentioned in my earlier correspondence with you, we were very disturbed to learn that you suffered from insect bites of some description during your stay, and extend our sincerest apologies for the discomfort and inconvenience this has caused.

On receipt of your previous notification by e-mail, we immediately made a thorough inspection of the villa you occupied, along with our Executive Housekeeper and pest control contractor. All items of bedding, especially the mattress and bed frame were carefully examined, along with every other item of furniture in the villa. The examination of the mattress revealed not a single mark of any description. We removed the wardrobe, baggage rack and writing desk, and even the skirting around the floor. Every aspect of the villa was checked, but we found no sign nor evidence whatsoever of any bedbug infestation. These little creatures are very difficult to see, but they do leave behind telltale droppings and cast nymphal skins. Our examination of the villa produced no such evidence. The villa was then sealed and cold fogged, which again produced no indication of the presence of bedbugs. We can therefore assure you that this insect was definitely not the cause of your skin irritation.

We have a dedicated team of qualified pest control staff who do all possible on a daily basis to control and treat various areas of the resort. Each room and villa is checked on a regular basis and sprayed on every check out. The entire property is fogged on a weekly basis and each room and villa is sealed and "cold fogged" twice every year. However, as you are undoubtedly aware, in an environment such as this, it is just not possible to eliminate the multitude of insects that abound in such a tropical setting.

The musty smell you detected on entering the villa is caused by the thatched grass roofing, and not by insects. This unfortunately is a comment we from time to time, as some people are quite sensitive to this smell, which can become quite pronounced if there has been rain. Should guests mention this to us during their stay, we provide the room with an ionizer to help alleviate the problem.

Once again we are so sorry for the aggravation you experienced, and again ask that you please accept our sincere apologies, and trust it will not mar your impression of this beautiful island and Maya Ubud.

Best Regards,

Paul Blake
