“something very special about Maya”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2010

My partner and I took a trip to Bali and spent 12 days there - Nusa Dua, Ubud, Seminyak. We spent the last 4 nights at Maya Ubud. We chose our hotels carefully and I have to say it really paid off.

Of the 4 days there, we spent one day in Ubud, went on a bike tour to the mountains, and then felt we deserved to spend the next 2 in the resort. We just didn’t want to leave.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom villa with a view of the rice paddies, it also had a private pool. The room was nice, it had some modern features but was very cosy and I felt comfortable and at home here.

In fact the whole resort has an amazing balanced feel to it – a certain peacefulness. It is very well designed and this is obviously taken into account.

On our first night we had a special romantic dinner setting on an open air decking. It was a delicious 5 course fine dining menu and excellent service to match. The food in the hotel was all very good, loved the Teppanyaki!

Yes you can find cheaper in town but if you want for 5 star quality food and service, try the 3 restaurants here. Breakfast was great too.

The pools are very beautiful Infinity pools that sort of hang off the edge of a valley and river. It’s quite awesome really. They were well serviced and very clean which is important to us.

Right next to one of the pools is the best spa I went to whilst in Bali. The spa villas are right on the river and whilst you have your treatment you can simply hear the river and the birds. One of the best natural experiences ever for us and very romantic.

Perks:A complimentary shuttle that takes you to town during daylight hours. Free wifi in the rooms. Free afternoon tea in the bar.

Overall the best place we stayed at in Bali, and we stayed in some beauties.

From the cold drink and chilled towels upon reception, we felt so well taken care of at Maya; breathtaking location on a steep hillside above a rushing stream; swimming in either of the two infinity pools was otherworldly! Spa treatments in the open air pavillions perched over the river were fabulous. Every place we sat or ate was beautiful, day and night. Great attention to detail from the design with long axial vistas and small sitting areas with fountains to the single flower placed on the threshold of the spa room entrance.

This place is just fantastic and is worth all the money you have paid. Stayed there 10 days in Garden villa and enjoyed every second - quiet and peacefull, located along the river and surroundet by green rain forest and rice fields. Place to read, meditate, swim, enjoy Bali massage, excellent spa procedures and forget about everything. 10min. from Ubud center and not far from all others tourist objects - Tanahlot and Ulwatu temples, Vulcano, Monkey forest, Paradise beach e.t.c. Friendly staff and excellent food. For traveling around Bali I can reccomend our local english speaking driver/gid -Jan. Quite new 5 seat car with A/C and appropriate price around 40$ per 8 hour drive (all includet). Call him or send sms, he will be more the happy ;o) + [--]

We spent 4 nights at Maya Ubud in March and (except for the first night) it was great. We had reserved a Superior Room in the main building, overlooking the rice fields. Upon check-in, we were a little disappointed that the rice field view was more like a tiny slice of rice field view. However… Everything else seemed lovely. The grounds are extensive and lush. The staff is very friendly and efficient and their sense of humor is always in evidence.

Our first night was terrible. We were on the 2nd floor of the 3 storey building. Above us was a high-heeled stomper, accompanied by a heavy-footed clomper. Not good on tile floors. Even worse were the neighbors. Our room had a connecting door and on the other side of the door was a group of boisterous, happy, laughing chatterers. They went on and on until the wee hours. Their phone rang several times. The last time it rang was at 3 am and it sounded as if it was ringing in our room. There is absolutely no sound barrier between connecting rooms. In the morning, we were ready to check out, but we kept our cool and asked politely if we could have a quieter room. We could! Thank goodness. We moved to the 3rd floor so no-one was above us, and to a room without a connecting door. Bliss! Bonus – we were on the other side of the building and the view of the rice fields was just as good as we had originally expected. After that we had no more problems and all was well.

The breakfast buffet is reasonably extensive, but almost the same every day. They could do with a little more variety. They are willing to make things to order, though, such as poached eggs on an English muffin, and they’ll keep the cappuccinos coming as long as you like, so it’s pretty good overall.

Afternoon tea is served every day at 4 pm – coffee, tea and a small selection of cakes – at no charge. This is a very nice idea. It turns out that after an afternoon of serious lounging around one of the pools, you can become a little hungry before dinner time. Afternoon tea is just the thing!

We each had a massage at the Spa and we were both happy. We asked them to be gentle and they were. We were then given discount coupons for subsequent massages. We didn’t have any more, but if we had, they would have been cheaper and cheaper each time.

The hotel offers free activities every day – beginners’ yoga every morning and in the afternoons the activities vary day-by-day. On our days 3 and 4 I went to the yoga classes and thoroughly enjoyed them. I regret that I skipped them on the first 2 days. The instructor was very kind and a very good instructor.

There is a Nature Walk which is lovely, but does involve lots of stairs. Taken slowly, it is a peaceful and enjoyable hour or so among the greenery and near the river.
Maya Ubud is about an 8-10 minute drive from central Ubud. This might be a 30 minute or so walk except for the heat, and after dark it would not be a good idea at all because there are no street lights once you leave the downtown area, so it would be dangerous. The hotel operates a shuttle service every hour, but only from 9 am to 5 pm. Between shuttles, or after 5 pm, you have to use a ‘taxi’ – the same hotel vans that are used for the shuttle service, but you have it to yourself and it costs 40,000 rupiah. We only used the shuttle one day and used the ‘taxi’ service all the other times we came and went. 40,000 rupiah really isn’t much – less than a taxi at home, and the drivers will take you wherever you want to go, instead of dropping you at the Market, where the shuttle drops you. Early in our stay, one of the drivers gave us a mini-tour around town, and another day a driver waited for us while we went into a store and then took us on to our main destination. The price didn’t increase, so it was a good deal.

We do not hesitate to recommend Maya Ubud. Just don’t accept a room with a connecting door!

Very clean and spacious rooms. Buffet breakfast very good. Service excellent. Complimentary shuttle bus runs hourly into Ubud. Only downfall everything in US dollars and meals quite expensive.

Stayed in Maya Ubud 3 nights when travelling with my partner in Bali for one week.
I have never been so disappointed:
-First of all, we booked a standard room. When ckecking in, the reception staff teased us by presenting us another room type and asking if we wanted to upgrade to the higher room and pay 3 times more than what we paid.
-Room was not clean at all: some ants were around the fruit basket left on the minibar and dead mosquitoes were stuck on the curtains.
-During the first night, I was woken up by a bird which was singing loud "KROUAK KROUAK"
-Every single trip to Ubud city center was dead costly...better rent your own car.

In one sentence: skip this expensive hotel with bad service and unclean room.
