“Charming hotel amidst the rice paddies of central Bali”
Reviewed 5 September 2010

I booked this hotel spontaneously through expedia.de. It was comparably cheap for a three star hotel in tourist-packed Ubud. I read some of the reviews and was not expecting much by the time I got there. And I was in for a very pleasant surprise.

This hotel is run by a foundation to train underprivileged youths in all areas of running a hotel. This means that all the staff (at least all I saw) are 14 to 18 years old. Before you reach the actual hotel reception you walk past the dormitory building and the boarding school, which is certainly not what you´d expect upon arriving at a "resort".

The staff, ie the youths, are very welcoming, cordial, polite and helpful. Probably more so than in any other place I´ve been to in Indonesia. Any wish you utter will be taken care of in an instant. All the staff are eager to help and to oblige and are genuinely interested in your wellbeing.

The room, I had a "Rice Field View Deluxe", was very spacious, well kept and tastefully furnished. The bathroom was huge and boasted a gigantic tub. The yellowish colour of tub and toilet, that I had first mistaken for dirt and yellowed materials, proved to be yellowish marble and thus neither tub nor toilet were dirty or old at all. As the name suggests, you have a superb view of the surrounding impossibly green rice paddies. The only thing I missed was a private balcony, but then there are plenty of places in the old, yet well-maintained grounds, to enjoy a cold beer and the frog concert.

There is a nice hotel pool, but beware of chipped and loose tiles. There are also some sunbeds and I seem to have been the only one to use them...

The included breakfast consisted of A-la-Carte American or Indonesian breakfast and a fresh (!!!) fruit juice - never had that anywhere else, not in even in 5*-hotels.

As the hotel is about 5km away from touristy Ubud in the adjacent village of Peliatan, there is a free shuttle bus taking you there and back every couple of hours. You can also rent a motorbike very cheaply and thus move around independent from shuttle bus schedules.

The hotel offers an impressive number of extra activities, such as yoga classes, cooking classes, dance lessons or nature walks in the rice paddies. I did the latter and it was the most charming thing one can imagine. I was accompanied by three teenagers who explained a lot and basically just enjoyed guiding a tourist through their beautiful country. A very personal experience that is not exactly cheap at IDR 250,000, but certainly worth every cent.

Although there is only teenagers around, the place is very peaceful and quiet and all the youngsters were extremely well behaved. And the nights in the (squeaky) beds, hearing only the cicadas and the frog concert make you forget the touristy, loud and tacky side of Ubud. If I were to come back to Ubud (and I really don´t like the place) I would always go back to charming Suly Resort. It´s not the poshest and certainly not the most modern hotel in the area, but probably the most charming one - and with every Rupiah you spend, you contribute to the foundation that means a real opportunity for so many children!
