“An elegant hotel but focused on groups rather than couples”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

We stayed at the Greenways a few years ago and experienced a quiet and relaxing break. Based on that experience we booked four nights for our recent stay expecting the same environment. However, that was not to be so as Greenways appears to be now focused on weddings, large groups and corporate events.

For our stay we arrived on the Friday to learn that a wedding group was booked in for the Friday and Saturday nights and over 100 people for a corporate event on the Sunday.

The effect on our stay was that all the acceptable rooms had been taken by the wedding group and that we had been relegated to an unacceptable small room which was badly configured and cluttered by the amount of furniture in the room. Not what we had expected, but at least I was able to arrange to change rooms once the wedding group had left on the Sunday. Next we went down to breakfast on the following morning and sat down to dine in the Hotels very elegant and quiet Garden Restaurant. However, just as we were thinking this is very pleasant a large and noisy group from the wedding with noisy children in tow came down to breakfast. We left and had breakfast delivered to our room.

Now why can’t Greenways have separate breakfast dining for large noisy groups and then a quiet area for couples seeking elegance and refinement.

On the Sunday the day of the corporate 100 plus barbecue we returned to the hotel to find all the parking taken and cars parked all the way down the driveway to the hotel. Luckily I had arranged to reserve a parking spot for the Lamborghini I had hired for a couple of days. But why not reserve a few parking spaces for hotel guests ??

On the Sunday once the wedding guests had left the whole ambiance of the hotel changed. We were now able to move to a very elegant and spacious room on the top floor of the hotel. Breakfast could be enjoyed peacefully in an elegant setting and the hotel was no longer cluttered by parked cars.

Throughout our stay the staff from the Manager down were friendly and helpful and we particularly remember Karina the young woman in reception who was really friendly and very helpful and reserved a parking spot for our Lamborghini. A lovely young woman who is an asset to the hotel.

We dined in the hotel restaurant on two occasions and the food was very good. On one occasion we had the Brassiere menu and while the food was also very good we thought that portions were a bit small for a Brassiere. We also had three of our four breakfast in the hotel restaurant and the food was excellent, the service faultless and the presentation imaginative.

So Greenways, for wedding, large groups and corporate events great at any time. However, if you are a couple seeking a quiet relaxed stay in an elegant or even romantic environment then do not stay at Greenways if large groups of any nature have booked the hotel out.

We stayed here last weekend lovely hotel -great spa facilities however when we were shown to our room it was like a furnace. The heating was turned off and we opened the large windows, this did not help when we went to bed the large room fan had been turned on but it was too loud to leave on. We slept with both windows wide open but still too hot. The hotel were obviously aware of this problem however the receptionist the next morning when asked about it gave a rather feeble apology. (Perhaps its proximity to the sauna and steam rooms etc needs to be looked at?) Lovely dinner, disappointing eggs Benedict for breakfast! Lovely situation but we will probably not return

Room Tip: Not the spa area although beautifully decorated

A friend and I spent a lovely spa day for our birthdays. We were greeted by very pleasant staff who regretted to inform us that the hydro pool was out of action. As our treatments weren't until the afternoon and it was 10 am we decided to change the treatment to the morning and luckily the pool was mended by lunchtime. Had a very good massage for an hour and then enjoyed a 2 course lunch for £15 which was of excellent standard.
The outside hot tub was great to sit in on a glorious day nit so sure I'd enjoy it so much if it was raining.
Staff were very attentive and courteous, nothing was to much trouble!

Such a beautiful location and house.....

We were warmly welcomed on our arrival and we're made to feel at ease and settled straight away. We had a mini tour of the hotel before being shown to our room (the oak) which was beautifully presented and typically English (classic wooden furniture and beautiful 4 poster bed). I had booked spa appointments in the afternoon so we spent an hour sat in the sun in the mini courtyard and had a dip in the hottub (highly recommend).

In the evening we had a reservation in the restaurant; beautiful food and fantastic service! The staff were all attentive, polite and really helpful.

One negative for me was that there was no iron in the room but otherwise everything was spot on.
If I'm in Cheltenham again I would definitely stay here again...

Arriving early, initially the building work being completed at the site takes away a bit of the charm, however as soon as your inside the premises I simply cannot fault anything at all.

Welcomed warmly by the staff and shown to our rooms, we stayed in room 6 and 10, which were simply amazing, Spacious, full of character, everything that you could ever need and it can only be described as having your own flat within the hotel. A filling afternoon tea later, we opted for a late dinner and the food was simply sensational and is by far the best hotel food I have had, even beating some of the better restaurants I have reviewed previously. I had a starter of duck bon bon, followed by the lamb cutlet and finished with cheese cake. Amuse bouche and complimentary appetisers were also thrown in, along with friendly service throughout.

The spa facilities were of a high standard, especially the outdoor wooden hot tub, which alleviated the breakfast bloat quite nicely.

The staff at this hotel cannot help you enough and are very approachable and friendly, especially at reception, This has become one of my preferred destinations when in this part of the country.

Couldn't get into the my usual Hotel du Vin in Cheltenham so found this place on Laterooms. Really, really impressed. Travelling as I do for work it is so refreshing to walk into a "reception" where the check-in desk is a piece of classic English furniture and a welcoming smile. I was then shown to my room (how often does that happen at this price??) which was beautifully decorated and very comfortable, but to be picky I would have liked a radio in the room.

The restaurant also far exceeded my expectations. Food was excellent in terms of flavour and presentation, and waiting staff had been very well trained. In fact, one of the delights of this place is how good the hotel staff are at making you feel welcome and being respectful to the guests.

I've noticed also in my travels with work that an overnight shoe cleaning service is dying out - not here, so again the hotel offers great service for the price.

This place is a gem. The spa is superb also. It's small but beautifully decorated and is the first sauna I've been (and I've tried many) that had (relaxation) music playing in the sauna. Fantastic! why don't other spas have this?

The weak points - cancellation policy of 48hrs is a bit draconian, particularly when I need flexibility for travelling on business. The eggs benedict for breakfast, which is standard fare on the menu, could do with better ham! And a radio in the room.

So in summary, for the price I paid for the room makes this hotel fantastic value for money, and it punches well above its rates. I'll be back here when on business next, and will bring the wife for a weekend break.

Room Tip: Standard rooms are very comfortable but worth paying/getting an upgrade simply for the size of room!
