“Fantastic Island”

Rubondo Island National Park
Attraction details
Reviewed 5 January 2014

This is a magic little island, been here a few times and you can stay in the main camp on all inclusive rates with comfortable rooms with a restaurant, bar and small pool or in a more basic and very rustic self catering camp were you bring your own food and drink and cook your food on the fire. The Island is heavily forested and has a large range of game animals. We have completed a few walks, done a drive across the island and boated around large parts of it. We were lucky one day and from the boat saw 3 elephants drinking from the water. The island is a little rough and this is more of a down to earth safari than a luxury experience with all the trimmings, but if you are up for this and can get to the island it is well worth the visit.

Rubondo Island is a great national park to visit. The boat-safari was great! We saw a lot of animals en beautifull birds. We also did a walking safari which was great to see more of the island and the nature. We stayed in cabana's and from there we could see the lake with hippo's in it.The rangers were really friendly. It's definitely worth to visit. You have to take your own food and drinks with you because you cannot buy it on the island.

My wife and I went to Rubondo Island for our wedding anniversary. We have done missionary work for the last 28 years and have visited nearly all of the national parks in both Tanzania and Kenya. But Rubondo is different from them all. First of all, we traveled from Mwanza to Geita and then a National Park Boat ranger came to pick us up. The roundtrip cost of boat transport was $100 but worth it. We stayed in one of the cottages on the island (cost $20 per night) and woke up each morning to look out over Lake Victoria and see the hippos splashing around. But this island doesn't have the usual African wildlife. But if you are interested in birds or rare wildlife, this is the place to come. Don't miss the boat safari ($50)! The rangers are very familiar with the birds and fish and will take you alongside the crocodiles and hippos on the lake. Definitely one of our best safaris!
