“Relaxing weekend”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

We recently stayed here for a little weekend getaway for our anniversary. This was our first stay at the lodge and we were pleasantly surprised. Our room was nice...clean and comfy bed. All of the staff were so nice. We enjoyed the hiking and walking trails offered as well as the pedal boat we rented to use on the lake. It was a beautiful area! I can't say enough about the restaurant that is located in the lodge! It had amazing food on the buffet and the BEST strawberry cobbler I've ever had! The park also lakeside cottages available and we are already planning to go back and stay in one of those. If you're planning on being in the area, I definitely recommend giving this place a try!

Room Tip: We had a room on the backside of the lodge so we had a beautiful lake view

We stayed in the furthest cabin from the lodge, a 2 bedroom. (When booking on line, select 2Br Cottage, 4Dbl, Lake - as we felt this was one of the best for a couple of reasons).
Our reservations were for April 11, 12 and 13 of 2014.
There were several events going on while during our stay, we were there to hunt morels with Chris Matherly and Levena Holmes (from morelmushroomhunting.com and "Filthy Riches" on Nat Geo). We had about 20 in our group, most stayed at the lodge or in a cabin.
There was also a photography weekend hosted by Kentucky State Parks, as well as a religious women's retreat. It was turkey hunting season and a couple of cabins held camouflaged hunters, who were difficult to see, but easily heard. Just kidding. Honestly, the cabins are spaced out enough that unless you are hiking or walking nearby, you would not hear others. (This may be partly because it was cool and misty, so not a lot of time was spent outdoors)
Our cabin: Big, spacious, two bedrooms a bathroom (good water pressure), good sized closet in the hall, in the bedrooms we found hanging rods, chest of drawers, night stands and tube type televisions. The living area also had a tube television, not a great selection of viewing options, but that was not an issue. The living area was open, had a nice couch and easy chair. The kitchen was adjacent, and a dining table was right there too, enough chairs to seat eight. To extend the living space, there was a very large screened in porch facing the lake.
The kitchen had a full sized refrigerator and stove. The only criticisms I had were in this department, no sharp knives and the cookware was not the best. Oh, yeah, we had some uninvited guests, wasps and fuzzy black crawly things, neither of which were terribly intrusive. All in all, we enjoyed the accommodations. We did not find the stairs to be strenuous, we were on the end, so to the right (west) of our cabin, it was just woods and lake and trails.
We dined in the lodge restaurant twice, we found the food to be fresh and tasty, down home cookin’. Nothing fancy, but you could tell some locals came to the park restaurant just for the food. If it were closer to where we live, we’d go there for meals regularly.
We will return.

Room Tip: our cottage was " 2 Br Cottage, 4Dbl, Lake ", furthest from the lodge. the rates were $125...

Dated, and it seems the state hasn't paid very much attention to it in the last few years, the bathroom door (Room 207) was hard to close and didn't lock. Outdoor patio is unusable, but the window works just fine. Continental breakfast comes included. Campers however are blocked from some amenities such as the pool. Internet was finicky and at times didn't work, I recommend staying somewhere else for business trips. Overall pretty good.

Room Tip: Rooms 207 or further are unlikely to have decent internet. Ask for a second floor room, as they are...

My husband and I recently spent the night in a one bedroom cottage for a little winter getaway. Sad to say no fireplace in this one, but there are other cottages with fireplaces that were already rented.

I must say, the staff was quite friendly as was our experience from visiting the state park a couple of years before, so it seems to be the norm. We ate lunch and dinner at the lodge dining room, which seemed clean and quaint. The food was pretty good - not amazing, but not bad. The lodge is your only convenient choice for dining, so if you are staying longer than a day or two, you might want to bring some groceries. After dinner, we sat by the fireplace for a little bit, enjoying its warmth.

As for the cottage, it seemed dated, as expected. There was a funny smell upon arrival. It seemed like someone had smoked in it, and the cleaning staff used a lot of potent chemical cleaners to rid the odor. There was no visible dirt or grime. The side by side refrigerator/freezer was spotless. The bedroom had only a full size bed, but was okay in comfort. The water pressure could be improved. The shower wasn't much more than a trickle. The living room and bedroom both had televisions, albeit the old tube style. Seems with the cost of flat screens going down, the resort could afford to put these in their cottages. The main lodge boasted flat screens in the common areas as well as the dining room. Not sure of the lodge rooms.

As with most vacation lodging, there are some requirements guests must complete - chores, so to speak - before you can check out. We had to strip the bed sheets and pillow cases, which made me wonder if they wash the comforter on top. It specifically said "sheets and pillow cases only" in the instructions.

Then we had to pile up any used towels in the bathroom. All dishes had to be washed (no dishwasher), dried and put away and it took a while for the kitchen sink to fill up, hence the lack of water pressure. Let's just say I washed my cups before using since the method of "clean dishes" is dependent upon whoever the previous guest was. All trash had to be removed and taken to the curbside. After doing all of this, I didn't feel so bad about tracking mud in from a hiking trip.

Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but please don't expect anything exceptional. We were glad to come home to our flat screen and comfy queen size bed. In the warmer months, if you plan to be outdoors a lot, whether renting a boat or hiking their really great trails and you only want a private spot to rest your head and keep something cold in the fridge, this might be ideal, but for a really nice spot to enjoy a romantic evening, not so much.

Room Tip: Bring air freshener.

We stayed for three nights and our cabin was clean and ready for check in. The staff was always smiling, answered any questions we had about local attractions. Lots of wildlife and beautiful views. Will stay again.

We spent 4 nights in a cabin at Pennyrile State Forest and had great time. The cabin was a 2 bedroom with 1 bath and a small but complete kitchen. There is a good golf course that we played and a lodge that served either off the menu or a buffet. We ate off the buffet the 3 meals that we did eat at the lodge and thought the food was good and reasonably priced. The only problem with the park or maybe it is a good problem; there is no cell phone service. However, it was refreshing not seeing people standing around talking, checking facebook, or having phones ringing in the dining room. There is internet service at the lodge. The most impressive part of the weekend stay was the staff; everyone was friendly and did their best to make our stay a memorable one. This includes the people at the front desk, dining room, housekeeping, the lady at the pro shop at the golf course, everyone made us feel welcome. For a nice quite getaway, this is the place. We plan to return

This little lake & lodge, perched high above its banks, are truly gems of W KY's natural scene. About 20' from Dawson Springs, & about 40' from Madisonville, my former home of 6 yrs, the creek-fed lake is still large enough for canoes, swimming, & fishing. There's a beach w/ rentable boats & numerous nature trails. There are also very remote picnic areas & 2 bedroom cabins for vacationing families. There are 18 holes of golf, the newer back 9 of which are splendid, w/ the older front squeezed in on either side of the creek bed & less well tended.

The real draw for me is the lodge building itself. The main lounge is high ceilinged w/ a big fireplace, TV, & numerous comfortable seating. In short, this is as grand a space as possible for such a little building. I spent many cozy hours here during my ennui-relieving winter wknd getaways reading & watching TV (& until about 8 yrs ago smoking cigars). Several times in the heart of February I nearly had the place to myself. The lodge rooms are nothing special, save for the cliff top view of the northern end of the lake, broken by evergreen limbs. Ask for an upstairs room, as their balconies afford a better view & more privacy than the lower patios. There is a pool which I've never tried, typically due to the season, but which is large & busy on summer wknds. The restaurant, while not as finely built as the lounge, offers well cooked standards & a wknd buffet (the catfish is tasty). If you need a place to spend a few days winding down in the woods, this is a superb choice.
