Owner description: Horse Racing's Living History Museum! At Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, KY, the horses may not be racing anymore, but they are winners everyday. Founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen, Old Friends cares for more than 165 horses across three states, many of them stallions whose racing and breeding careers came to an end. A "Rural Hall of Fame", the farm welcomes visitors to get up close and personal with such stars of the turf as Kentucky Derby and Preakness winners Silver Charm and War Emblem, Belmont Stakes winner Sarava, millionaire gelding Arson Squad, and many more. Hear their stories, meet them in person...Er..Horse. Our guests come to visit a few ex-racehorses, they leave having been touched by the heart of a Thoroughbred hero. Winter hours at our Kentucky farm November 4th through March 14th - one tour daily at 11:00 only. March 15th through November 4th, tours are daily at 10 am, 1 pm & 3 pm.

This was a great experience to meet some of the horses we see on the track but in a different setting. Matthew, our guide is a encyclopedia of knowledge about horse racing and the horses there at the farm and its easy to see he loves sharing that knowledge (and a carrot or 3 with the horses).

Let me just say, I am NOT a fan of the thoroughbred race industry and how they dispose of their horses if their careers are less than successful. But this farm gave me hope that there are good and kind people who really care about past race horses. Becky was out guide and she was very good. She gave us background on each of the horses and their accomplishments. It was impressive to meet such champions as War Emblem and Silver Charm. My absolute favorite was Afternoon Delight! We got to pet and feed the horses carrots and they were eager for their treats. The farm was very well kept and a number of volunteers work there daily. Parents need to keep an eye on their children. This was the highlight of my little Lexington getaway!

Old Friends provides a dignified retirement for Thoroughbreds who are done with their racing and breeding careers. Some are famous, others are not, but all have a story and you will learn about their lives and careers. Wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather to walk around the farm on grassy ground that may be uneven in some areas. This is a real working farm and there may be mud, flies, and farm odors. The horses are all retired and get to be horses and spend most of their time outside. The tour is family appropriate, but children need to old enough to understand they cannot pet a horse without asking the guide first (some of the horses may bite).

Very informative and humorous tour guide. Amazing to see these retired race horses and hear their individual stories, including the total purse amounts each has won. Well worth the time
