My husband and I were in Danville , Ky this weekend visiting our son at Centre College. We decided did not want to stay at one of the generic hotel chains like we did last year and instead went down the road to the Shaker Inn.
The Inn is part of the Shaker Village which is a lovingly restored living monument to the "Shakers" that lived there until about 1910.
While the Shaker Inn will never be a "five star hotel" it was a delightful place to stay. The charm of the old style rooms (but happily with up to date facilities, TV etc.) and the really wonderful staff make for a very comfortable stay. It was wonderful to wake up in a place that looks like a Norman Rockwell painting! Too beautiful to describe!

We booked two nights at the Shaker Inn and had to change them at the last minute which proved to be no problem whatsoever.
This is a lodging experience that should not be judged using the same criteria as normal hotels as it is somewhat unique.
Our room was located upstairs in one of the small restored buildings. The furnishings were somewhat spartan and both of us found the Tempur-pedic mattress remarkably uncomfortable and neither slept very well on either night. The walls are also thin and one can hear other guests in the building which has either three or four guest rooms.
We ate in the Trustee Building on one night and whilst the food was okay we felt that it was very much overpriced. The buffet breakfast was certainly not up to a reasonable standard.
If you wish to spend a couple of nights in a slice of history then this could be a good place to stay but it is not luxury accommodation by any means. The setting however is wonderful and the history of the Shaker Village is fascinating.
Don't bother to visit Harrodsburg however, it is sad and run down.

My husband and I stayed here for our 31st wedding anniversary. We stayed in room 312 in the main building with the dining area on the first floor. We stayed two nights. Our room was very nice and spacious with one single and one double bed. The worst part of the room was the squeaking floors and the low height of the shower head in the bathroom. The floors were the worst I have ever experienced. If you stayed in one of the other building it might not be so bad. Also at night it seem to take the bottom two floors forever to get quiet. I realize and very much respect the authenticity of the place. I also am very thankfull for all the donations of hard work, time, money and love that went into the preservation. For this was the very reason we chose it but I also would like to get a good night's rest. The buildings, history, animals, property, demonstrations, shopping were great. Breakfast buffet was average but lunch and dinner were wonderful. The best we had were Johnny Cakes and Country Ham, Chicken Croguettes, Herb Marinated Chicken Breast and Pork Tenderloin. They also serve bread and upon request, free of charge, pickled watermelon rind and pickled beet. We also tried the lemon pie which is fixed like an apple pie with pie crust on the top and bottom. Definately come here to shop, walk, hike, eat and enjoy but you might want to stay in one of their other buildings.

Every July we drive from Toronto to Louisville, Kentucky for a literary conference, and every year we plan to stop off, either going or coming, at the beautiful and serene Shaker Village in Harrodsburg. The Shaker Village is a very interesting and well run attraction with carefully restored buildings, lovely grounds, educational exhibits, and attractive and useful items in the two gift shops. For us, however, the real pleasures begin when the grounds close at 5 o'clock and guests at the hotel accommodations have the whole place to themselves. Overnight guests can stay in the main building, the Trustees House, or in one of the other buildings on the extrensive grounds. Strolling along the quiet lanes after dinner, watching the farm animals grazing, breathing in the fresh air and then retiring to a very comfortable room (Tempurpedic Mattresses) is a perfect restorative. Rooms combine chaste and simple Shaker furniture with all modern amenities. The dining room (licensed!) provides excellent traditional meals. Room and meal prices are extremely reasonable for the quality provided. A highly recommended stop for travellers of all ages.

My husband and I decided to spend one night at Shaker Village to learn about the community. We arrived at 4:30p so by the time we checked into our room, it was too late to tour the grounds. (Almost everything closes at 5p). The next day, we expected to walk around for 2-3 hours and then leave. Boy were we mistaken. After approximately 6 hours of walking around, talking to historians, attending a music performance, and shopping the two on-site shops, we had to tear ourselves away to get on the road to our next destination. I was told that this was a one-day visit location; I disagree. I would say it is definitely a two-day visit if you are interested in really learning about the history. We talked to several historians and learned so much about the Shaker religion, the appeal of the community, the buildings, etc. It was fascinating! The staff is extremely educated and nice. I love that they don't pretend to be Shakers; they talk about the community in the third person. It is much more believable and realistic.

There were several negative reviews about the food, especially breakfast. We found our meals to be a little expensive, but the food was very good. Dinner was definitely cuisine, not "local favorites", but the chef did a wonderful job. The breakfast buffet was fair.

Our room was simple, but nice. They did not have any King or Queen size beds so we got 2 double beds. Our room did not have Wi-Fi, but it was available in the other building. The bathroom was a nice size and the shower had good water pressure.

We would definitely go back at least for another couple days as we did not get through all the buildings open for touring. I must say, when we went there were not a lot of other people there. In fact, in our building, I believe only 2 other rooms had guests. It was quiet and was in located in a beautiful area of KY.

This is a fantastic place to stay. If you visit here, be sure to stay overnight. After all the day visitors leave and the crowd thins down, you will really feel as if you've traveled back to another time. It's so beautiful. The rooms are lovely and very comfortable. While the dinner is not cheap, they had an outdoor picnic option available as well. There are so many picturesque paths for walkers to enjoy in the early evening. I just love the village.
