“No frills just laid back lake life”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Spent Friday and Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend at the lodge. It is definitely nothing fancy but it gets the job done. It was clean, the people are very friendly. We of course spent most our time on the lake. Breakfast at the lodge was good. It's just like any other state park property outdated and needs funds. Would stay there again.

I have stayed here on three occasions and there is always something wrong in the dining room. Busy weekend with no buffet, busy weekend and little wait staff, etc. I love the park, rooms are very clean, pool is nice but dining service is horrible.

Before you choose to stay at a state park lodge, you must ask yourself....are you a traveler or a tourist? Either are fine, you just need to be honest with yourself and know. A traveler, travels for the experiences...a tourist is there to see the sites and move on. Some trips you might be both and some times just one or the other. If you are thinking about staying at a state park - you must consider yourself a traveler and go for the experiences you will have.

We stayed recently at Lure Lodge. The scenery was beautiful and there were many things for us to do. Yes, you are isolated there and at the mercy of the restaurant - but you can also pack food to take with you for lunches. Although, if you are staying in the lodge, there are no mini fridges in your room, so bear that in mind.

From the outside, the lodge looks a bit 'rustic', but the rooms directly next to the lodge were all being remodeled. Our room was clean, bright, and welcoming. Each room has a balcony that looks out over the lake and makes up for the rustic appearance on the outside of the rooms. I stayed with my two young boys and felt very safe in the environment.

The swimming pool is heated - and I mean, really heated! You didn't have to 'talk' yourself into getting in with your children. The shallow end was 3.5 and it quickly dipped down to 5' with the deepest end at 9'. Personally for a family friendly venue - this is really too deep. My 9 year old could barely touch the bottom without going under after about 2 feet from the side of the pool. The entry is a ladder rather than the gradual steps. But, it was nice and big and the hot tub was also nice and big.

For the kids - and grownups, there are tennis courts, basketball courts, two playgrounds, plenty of green space, geocaches, and trails. A short distance away was a fish hatchery that while on the one hand you would think....really, fish hatchery...but...we went...and were thoroughly engrossed in the whole thing.

The lodge had some water damage after freezing pipes this winter, so they were remodeling the dining room. The wait staff went out of their way to be accommodating to the guests as the dining tables had been moved into the lounge and they had a limited menu for lunch and dinner. However, the food was good - and it was hot!

I would stay there again, we enjoy traveling to the state parks and getting out into the great outdoors. The stay was relaxing and enjoyable. Cable television kept the children entertained when they weren't playing outside or in the pool/gameroom. Watch for specials on overnight stays and our recommendation is to ask for the rooms directly next to the lodge.

Room Tip: Choose a room next to the lodge.

Me and the family rented a cottage here last weekend. Let me say I see what some reviewers say about the whole park needing modernizing, but this still is a great spot to get away. We originally booked a 2 bedroom cabin next to several others, but when we got to the location I felt there was too many people. I went back to the lodge rental office and asked for something else more private. The lady very cheerfully found us another place for the evening, in one of the wildwood cottages that are bigger and nicer than the one I actually originally reserved. The cabin was nice and arceatechtually interesting, sitting right next to the lake with plenty of room from the other cabins. Be sure and bring supplies with you as there is only a country store at the park, as the park is several miles from town. It does have a great lodge with dining room where we ate breakfast the next morning, I recommend the omelets you'll love them!

Room Tip: The lodge overlooks the lake on a hill and is cheaper than the cabins, but I recommend the wildwood...

Had I not stayed the night before in an Ohio State Resort Park, I'd probably give this property a five-star rating. Perhaps unfortunately, the contrast was remarkable in almost every way--age and quality of facilities, services, and "refinement" (if that matters to you).
However, the views and staff were very much the equal of any. The restaurant breakfast was ample, wonderfully prepared and served (real eggs and freshly sliced potatoes!), and very "Kentucky."
On the downside, the pool was very dreary and not open until 9am, so no early-morning swimming before traveling. I was struck by how noisy the environment was--the loud TV in the dining area seemed to encourage everyone to talk very loudly throughout the main building. There was really no quiet place to enjoy the view until I asked that the TV be turned off when I was the only one in the room. Housekeeping was excellent, but know that the rooms are showing their age, and smoking is still allowed on balconies. If you care, there's no lounge and no alcohol.
Be sure to have plenty of gas in your car when you leave if traveling south! Watch for deer on the 5 mile winding road leading to the lodge--a stunning but slow drive. Leave time for it, and you'll be rewarded, arriving relaxed and content. For best views, ask for the second floor. To have the best possible experience, know that this is an aging property and focus on the caring staff and beautiful setting.

Room Tip: Second floor has best views, but all are good.

The cold has taken a toll on this lovely resort. When we were there the beautiful restaurant was closed because of broken pipes. they served in the great room but it was crowded. Deserts were the same ones over and over and not that good. Some rooms were damaged. No provisions for those who needed to use WiFi since that area was a temporary restaurant. Pool was closed but opened again just before we left. We ended up in a cabin instead of a room. It was nice but we had to leave the faucets running all the time to keep them from freezing. I didn't like having to walk down the precarious path to the cabin. Also didn't like having to clear sheets off bed and take the trash out. No room service - no fresh linens or bed making during day. I really wish they would have warned us when we called. They acted like everything was normal except that the only rooms left were cabins. They should have told us the whole story. We have visited here many times and were disappointed at how they handled this situation. Normally we would give the place top ratings.

Room Tip: Get a room unless you really want a cabin. If we had arrived with food and coffee it would not have...

Stayed in a cabin for a long weekend with girlfriends. Nothing fancy but very comfortable beds, adequately sized rooms, furnishings and beautiful setting with lake view off back porch. Kitchen supplies were basic so bring favorite implements. Housekeeping staff went out of their way to be helpful!
