This is not a place for those looking for discount sushi, bento boxes, tempura this or that, or meat teriaki. You will be disappointed. But if you want something quite different from most Japanese restaurants and don't mind paying more for good quality on a small scale, then this is a place to try. The only real negative is no reservations.

By far the most authentic epicurean eatery in Lexington. Wonderful owners, food, and ambiance. A must try.

This place is one of the most unusual restaurants in Lexington. It is a small place that has a large and esoteric menu of tapas which are made while you wait, and a good selection of wines and sake. The owner takes great pains to make sure that the atmosphere is private and romantic. You can't make reservations because the owner doesn't want the atmosphere tainted by a phone ringing! I guess the phone is only for outgoing calls. The doors don't open until 8:00 PM. It is intimate, romantic, quiet and the food is impressive and expensive. We have been there three times and will be back.

We frequent this place once each month or two, many locals are not aware of this little secret gem of a place. The atmosphere and the jazz music are part of the appeal. Others rave about the food in previous revews. I second all the goodness of those detailed reviews. Everything we try is marvelous and an adventure; these small plates (tapas) are a true delight. By being that size, one can migrate toward so many divine options. This is not a sushi restaurant. The appeal here is to learn of other new & delicious food offered by the Japanese...the pork jowl or anything with miso is not to miss! Late night hours, quiet and relaxing. Not the place for young kids. It's a treasure that I only hate to recommend due to the chance that I will not find a seat if too many know about Yamaguchi.

Outstanding REAL Japanese restaurant. Not your typical sushi place. It is quaint, modern, inviting, small, charming, romantic place with great and authentic Japanese dishes that are very delicious and creative. Although the chef is from a small fishing village in southern Japan, his dishes are Tokyo inspired. Great variety of items accompanied by a fascinating list of Sake and other Japanese liquors. Dishes are small, tapas style, so order many. Gives you the chance to experience a multitude of flavors. Family OK, but no place for kids. Husband and wife service, which is outstanding, but slow. Great for us as we it gave us the chance to eat slow and enjoy the evening. Having been to many, many so called Japanese restaurants throughout the USA and the world, this one is one of the very best and our favorite. Will go back again and again. A bit expensive, but worth every penny.
