Owner description: Built in 1790, Locust Grove, a three story brick Georgian home, is the final home of General George Rogers Clark, the founder of Louisville, and conqueror of the Old Northwest Territory. The house was built by his sister Lucy Croghan and her husband William Croghan who raised 8 children here and hosted their brother William Clark, of Lewis and Clark fame, as well as Presidents Monroe, Jackson and Taylor, Vice President Arron Burr, statesmen such as Cassius Clay, and several artists including John James Audubon. This National Historic Landmark has been restored to reflect the elegance of General Clark's time at Locust Grove. The 55 acres of gardens, fields and woodlands are open for exploration daily.

This is a guided tour that begins with a film about the people who lived there. Then a guide takes you through the home itself. Very interesting and the guides are very knowledgeable. There are three floors to traipse up and down, so if you are in any way unable to clomp up and down the stairs, might want to skip this part. There are also some out buildings and a small museum to visit. We had a great time here! It takes about 2 hours in all.

We had the most wonderful tour guide and she had the most interesting stories about the house and the people. It has been beautifully restored and cared for and it was just really charming.

I know this might sound sacrilegious, but I personally like visiting here more than going to My Old Ky Home in Bardstown! The crowds are lower, it's IN Louisville, saving you the drive out of town, so you can do & see more. It also has more extensive grounds.

This National Historic Landmark tells an authentic story in an engaging and entertaining manner. The preservation story is interesting and unique as well. The location is an easy and scenic drive from downtown Louisville to the Ohio River bluffs.
