Owner description: The Belle of Louisville is the oldest operating Mississippi River style steamboat in the world. She and her sister vessel, the Mary M. Miller riverboat offer river cruises perfect for all ages. We offer cruises nearly year-round, and have special events throughout the season. The Mary M. Miller replaced the Spirit of Jefferson in July of 2017. She is named after the First Female Steamboat Captain. The Mary M Miller is not a steamboat but she does have a paddlewheel. She is climate controlled and has 2 indoor decks and a top deck under cover but open air.

We went on a dinner cruise in the Spirit of Jefferson which is the smaller replica boat.

The buffet was excellent with choice of hot and cold food.Soft drinks were included. The service at the bar wa poor with one person serving and a long queue,

The disco music was good and the ninety percent remaining passengers who were ex US military police on a reunion pleasant company. We sat beside a couple of locals who were very pleasant. Tne booking office said the purser would arrange for a taxi but we managed to walk back. I have ben on similar cruises in London, Prague and St Petersburg Florida and would rate it highly.

Despite living in Louisville for several years, the only notice I took of the Belle was during the Great Steamboat Race at derby time. On a whim, we decided to go on the evening sunset dinner cruise and found it to be an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours.

We boarded the boat about a half an hour before taking off and were allowed to explore the upper two decks while the ship played "whistling" music. Dinner was served on the second deck buffet style with a selection of Southern cooking (not my personal style, but decent for what it was). The DJ played a variety of music with most of it coming from the original rock and rat pack era. There is a dance floor that a lot of folks took advantage of. This may sound like an odd comment, but the bathrooms were well maintained, something that was unexpected in an old ship.

The cruise takes you east down the Ohio and the scenery is touch and go as you pass some beautiful houses and greenery as well as barges and factories. I would suggest going below deck to see the steam room and checking out the paddlewheel at work if you are not prone to motion sickness. After eating, we spent the majority of the time on the upper deck enjoying the breeze and the sunset.

The Thusday sunset cruise was $35/person for dinner but you can opt out and just do the cruise for $15. Halls Catering did the food but if I had to do it again I would have skipped dinner or booked when Masterson's was the caterer. The Belle offers live music on some cruises, a Sunday brunch, and afternoon tours that are educational. If you are a visitor to town, I would put it in the middle of your to-do list. If you are a local, make time for it one of these years.
