“A Property with B-, C+ effort”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2012

The Holiday Inn Express in Shelbyville, Kentucky sits just off Interstate 64 about 16 miles east of Louisville and 22 miles west of Kentucky’s capital city of Frankfort. Shelbyville, known as the “American Saddlebred Capital of the World”, was named after Kentucky’s first governor, Isaac Shelby and is the hometown of Kentucky’s first female governor Martha Layne Collins. A large, relatively new, high school has become her namesake in the county.

The HIE is an easy walk (1/2 mile maybe) to Weissinger Hills Golf Course, Shelbyville’s very popular , charming and challenging public golf track. The only eating establishment within walking distance is a “White Castle” Hamburgers, home of the “Breakfast Slider” (shudder!!). Within a half a mile there is a Cracker Barrel and a delicious barbecue restaurant called Ken-Tex. Go west on I-64 and there is a Cattleman’s Steak House, and a Great Escape Movie Theatre.

Okay, those are the potatoes, now to the meat of the meal: The Hotel. Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Shelbyville is like the school child with lots of talent but does just enough to get B’s and C’s.

The clean, two queen suite was roomy with a kitchenette and living area, a picture perfect flat screen TV with a good satellite package, firm but not hard beds, your choice of soft or firm pillows, and an adequate bathroom with mediocre water pressure and a one to two minute wait for hot water (and I think I’m being kind on the hot water). The small fridge kept drinks very cold.

Lighting in the room was lacking. The lamps, two of which had a strange hesitation before lighting, were good enough for a mild séance and, who knows, maybe help to hide a few of the imperfections of the room (dirt in the corners and a spider web or two).

The air conditioner was quite and efficient and kept a normal desired room temperature. The internet connection was sufficient.

You’re not going to get a Minnie Pearl “How-dee!” when you come through the door but the staff was friendly enough.

The Nit Pick

Some properties seem to adhere to the belief that only the normal offerings will keep their business afloat. And I suppose that is very often correct. With this Holiday Inn being the only hotel off this particular exchange as of 2012, they may be on to something. And I suppose that is why they call certain things “the extras’ when you get them. This property falls short in the “extras” department.

Okay, let us nit pick:

We were offered (and settled for) only one room key. Staying as long as we did, we certainly could have used another and should have asked for one, but is that REALLY an “extra”? Do we really have to ask for that?

Paint and drywall were pealing from the bathroom ceiling and the hair dryer emitted an incredible stink until it was cleaned by my wife. The pool area was very bland with no effort toward aesthetics (call me shallow but I like aesthetics!). The outside doors had no key access back into the hotel. The elevators didn’t sparkle, and call me shallow again, but I like my elevators shiny, pretty and absolutely beaming with “I will always work, always”; just a couple of ways to shoot for that A instead of the solid B- or C+.

Maybe or maybe not the hotels responsibility, but a young girl sat in the hall outside our room one night for a long time chatting (quietly at least) on a cell phone. It was just one example of how things didn’t pass the “feel right” test with flying colors.

The eggs at breakfast tasted, well, not like eggs. (Otherwise the breakfast was excellent.)

Overall, the strengths outweigh the weaknesses of this property and I would probably stay again if I had business here or if I were interested in the Saddlebred Horse Celebrations, but I can certainly understand if one passed this property by and settled for an Eastern Louisville, Frankfort or Western Lexington hotel.

Upon checking in, I had to wait for the front desk clerk for 15 minutes to check me in. When he finally showed up, he had issues to check me in. Being a Priority Rewards member using points, I didn't think it would be an issue. He ended up charging my credit card $25 "fee", which I finally got taken off. Then the room I had originally reserved was unavailable as they gave it to someone else. I was provided a "free upgrade" which turned out to be a nightmare. We were located to the last room on the floor in a corner. The heater was VERY loud and blew out cold out even on Hot an High. Calls to the front desk were unanswered. I walked down to the front desk in my pajamas only to be told that there is nothing they could do about it. Very sleepless night. I mentioned it to the manager the next morning our issues. They were able to clear the $25 charge. Will not stay here again.

Room Tip: Be sure to print out reservation to show exactly what you reserved!

We wanted to get past Indianapolis on our way back east and just needed a decent play to stay overnight. Everything was fine here and up to standards: nice staff, good breakfast, clean room, comfortable bed. We'd stay here again.

These types of properties are becoming more owned by India Nationals. Nothing against these folks, but properties are being ran down. This one did not have any working entrance doors that took the room key. You could exit, but had to enter through the main lobby. Rooms are old and in fact the owners I believe are living in one room, b/c there is one ground floor room that has a blanket as the window curtain. The other guy I was traveling with did not have a curtain in his room at all.

Getting worried that HI Express is letting hotels such as this go into the ground. I will not stay there again and suggest you do not either........

Room Tip: Find another hotel

I had issues with the Ramada and moved to the Holiday inn Express. The entire atmosphere was much better at this hotel: the lobby was clean, the room was clean and did not smell bad, the room was quiet and the breakfast area was clean and organized. I recommend this HIExpress when staying in Shelbyville.

...Surprised that the Holiday Inn allows the name to be placed on this hotel!
I expect the next time I drive by to see someone else is the owner/manager.
I could go into all the issues but will not. It is not up to Holiday Inn standards. It is worn out.
If you are there for a night, okay, but keep your expectations low.
The staff tries hard but are running against the wind.

Room Tip: Keep driving and go into Louisville.

Solid place to spend the night on the road- maybe a few dollars more than many other choices, but very friendly staff, clean, safe, and comfortable. Hot breakfast was pretty good too.
