“Great History, Beautiful Building”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

See where Huey Long was assinated! Walk the halls of the Kingfish. One of the most beautiful (and tallest) State Capitals in the US, the Louisiana Capital is not only breath taking in it's architectual beauty, the surrounding grounds are spectacular. Well worth taking time out of your day if visiting Baton Rouge.

“Imposing structure above all in Baton Rouge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

This has been a go-to destination for me ALL of my life. yes, since I was 6 years old. Then I very often took my children, and now my grand children. The exterior rises above all of the city and can be seen from miles away. 32 stores tall. the art deco facade and historical sculptures that greet you are most eye catching. Enter by the front steps as each step has a states name and the year it became a state. the interior is so magnificent. the marbles used on the floors and walls are exquisite. Louisiana history story is told here. PLEASE do not miss the small elevator ride to the top observation deck. The Empire what?? this view will take your breath away .. something for all ages here.

“Civic Pride in the Deep South”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

The capitol complex in Baton Rouge is a great place to visit. And it is all Free!! Mapped out and created by former Governor Huey Long, the grounds are immaculate and well preserved. The capitol building, a real depression era work of art, offers a free observatory some 35 stories above the city. Even on a hot day, the breeze and view from the 360 degree tower are refreshing and well worth the elevator ride. The lobby of the building is done in true art deco fashion and the government chambers are impressive. Out in the garden area, right smack in the middle of everything is the actual burial place and statue of Governor Long. Even in an era of southern right-wing anti-government fervor, the Louisiana state capitol is a testament to the enduring value of government at all levels. Doubt that any current politician would mess with this place!!

“Great stop on a tour of downtown!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2014

This isn't a "stay all day" attraction, but the architecture and design work that went into the State Capitol building is certainly worth absorbing for a couple hours. Beautiful work both inside and out, in stone and in paint.

The more interesting aspects involve the site of Huey Long's assassination, and on the day of our visit, there was a guide who seemed very knowledgeable about the event who gave us a short story of both the official and "unofficial" versions of the story.

The view from the top, though, makes this an experience you shouldn't miss. Being able to walk the entire way around the observation deck on top of the tower gives views that are rare in this part of Louisiana. The elevator ride, particularly the smaller elevator that takes you up the last few floors, might not be the best for someone who's overtly nervous about such things, or claustrophobic.
