“Could have been so much better”

On arrival we were greeted by the friendly owner and directed to the property which is located a short distance from her house.

As you can see from the photos on the Hideaways website, the building has been built/renovated to a high standard and the location (barring a noisy nearby rookery) is sublime- Martin is a beautiful village. The towels and bedding were clean and the mattresses very comfortable. Privacy is excellent thanks to well positioned fencing and there is ample parking. There was a delightful home-baked jam sponge cake waiting for us when we arrived, along with a very welcome 'bits and bobs' basket containing many handy kitchen items often missing from holiday rental properties (tea bags, coffee, stock cubes and much more). In fact, the kitchen was generally very well equipped. The bathroom contained an excellent shower and a boostable heated towel rail. Apart from the dingy twin bedroom, the property is largely bright and airy, benefitting from the morning sun.

Those were the good bits.

On entering the dining/living/kitchen area, there was a general impression of grubbiness. The sofas and rug were stained, the windows smeared and the curtains marked, presumably with similar food particles that were stuck to the skirt of the table cloth (admittedly clean on the upper surface). There was more than the odd cobweb within easy reach of a feather duster.

The toilet seat was very loose and impossible to tighten (bare threads?)- the lid fell on to your back every time you sat on it.

We took the filthy oven gloves to the owner's house and presume we had the same ones returned next day, duly washed. Fat globules hung from the cooker hood (which didn't work), the wooden spoon had a chunk knocked out of the end so we couldn't use it- a previous occupant had obviously tried stirring hot food with a plastic salad server instead, so that needed replacing too. My wife spent some time cleaning out the washing machine soap dispenser, so caked with powder it was practically blocked. Every hot drink contained crunchy bits from the furred-up kettle.

The built-in surround-sound system would have been better, had all the speakers worked. The under-floor heating was ineffective- the boiler was definitely firing most of the time but the rooms remained cool.

The windows in the bedrooms also needed cleaning and the chains for raising and lowering the blinds were broken.

Now for our major gripe. We don't have a dog but we generally don't mind them as long as their owners clear up after them. There's a polite request in the property welcome pack for dog owners to pick up their mess. When we left (a day early) I counted 10 dollops on the drive that the owner's dogs had deposited. Yuk!

Our impression was that the properties (the other one is called Russet) lack basic ongoing maintenance and need a jolly good clean.

“No need to look elsewhere...ideal rest & relaxation”
Reviewed 12 October 2014 for a stay in September 2014

Just what we were looking for - clean,comfortable,well equipped,excellent beds,plenty of hot water,underfloor heating,reliable Wi-Fi connection,the list goes on.
Arrived to find that the owner Cathy had left us a delicious cake, lovely gesture to start our stay.A great deal of thought has gone into providing all that is needed for you to enjoy a carefree break in peaceful surroundings - you even have use of a games room next door with pool table and facilities to dine in if you wish or you can just sit outside in the private garden, enjoy a drink and use the barbecue provided.
Highly recommended - so much so we've extended our stay and by the way, our Labrador couldn't have been happier in this delightful countryside location.
