“Beautiful getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2013

We stayed a total of 11 days with a brief travel break inbetween. Friends made the arrangements for us at this hotel and Jannina, the owner is their friend. She is fluent in English and very accomodating. The first room was drafty and chilly but the second was much better and had been updated with newer tiles. Both had fireplaces, but the wood did not burn well. The pillows and bedding was worn. Lighting was not good so the rooms were dark at night. Only 1 bedside light. The weather tended to be cool with intermittent rain. The grounds are beautiful and expansive with good security. During the stay there were conferences and even a wedding. The free breakfast was ordered off a menu and offered both American and local dishes. Food was good. Staff were very friendly with some more fluent than others. We were near friends who drove us around, otherwise you will need some kind of transportation. This is a nice place and is a favorite for groups who need conference space and rooms at a reasonable rate. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for updated room.

I see that there are no reviews for Hotel Villa Zurqui, let this be the first. My husband and I stayed there five nights in early January......... family emergency upon arrival back home delayed this review.
I must preface this review by explaining that it was terrible weather when we were there – cool, I’d go so far as to say cold - drizzly, windy, gusty , rainy, rainy, rainy weather. The staff were complaining , almost apologizing and we wore every piece of warm clothing we had.
PROS: The grounds are beautiful....off the road enough to stifle noises and large enough feel like an estate. There’s lots of parking. 24 hour security.
The owner, Jannina, speaks English, having lived in the USA for several years, and is helpful, pleasant and accommodating. The staff does not speak much English but, ever friendly, went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
Fireplace rooms are a little nicer and bigger than the cabins, most have a small balcony/patio.
Bathrooms large, lots of hot water, good towels.
Food was good......breakfast(included) , good coffee. We ate all our dinners there(reasonably priced) – best pescado con ajo and sweet&sour pork chops the whole trip. And they served stir-fried vegetable with the meat, rice&beans, instead of another starch.

CONS: The linens need replacing.......they’re not dirty, just thin – blankets and comforters and pillows ; not unusual for Costa Rican run hotels.
The fireplaces may look inviting but they smoke up the room in a windstorm, and do nothing to heat the place.
Our room needed a paint job to refresh the colors........I noticed that they had started in other cottages.

Their location near the toll booth on Highway #32, just before the entrance to Braulio Carrrillo Park makes it an ideal location if one wants to bird the foothill forests of Quebrada Gonzales, which is why we were there and why a busload of Scandinavian birders used it as a base for a couple of nights.
I would definitely return to spend a couple of days birdwatching and enjoying the grounds –hopefully in warmer weather.
