“A bit of a let-down”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 February 2012

Maison des Amis does some things really well - for example the breakfast voucher's a great bonus and enabled us to eat terrific food every morning at Chez Jacqueline's, a delightful little cafe/restaurant round the corner. Our room (Lemelle - Room 2) had a couple of really comfortable armchairs to relax in, the gazebo out on the Bayou's a lovely place to sit and we found the caretakers - Brenda and Russell - extremely helpful. And Breaux Bridge is an extraordinarily friendly, pleasant little town/big village.

But the downside is a real downer. This place could seriously do with some re-decoration and some TLC. The owner doesn't live locally - and it really shows. Our room had dirty scuffed paintwork, badly torn curtains and when we arrived, there was no drawer space in the chest-of-drawers which was full of sheets and towels (we were staying for 5 nights and really needed to unpack). 2 of the curtains started to come down during our stay and though Russell dealt with this straight away when we asked, it shouldn't really happen in a well-kept place. We didn't mind at all there not being an owner/B&B host on-site, we were expecting that and are independent, experienced travellers. But we felt the result is that the property feels uncared-for and run-down - ok for a low-cost, no-frills motel maybe but not what we'd have expected at this price and with some of the previous TA reviews.

We are glad you were able to experience great Louisiana cuisine, found our staff to be extraordinarily friendly, were comfortable in the arm chairs in the Lemelle room and enjoyed our grounds and gazebo.

Even though the owner doesn't live in Breaux, Bridge, the house and grounds have a lot of TLC. When linens, towels and household items are damaged, these items are replaced instantly. However, when damage occurs to a room and it needs to be repainted, the room has to be taken out of the inventory for several days. Painting and other repairs have to be scheduled with our maintenance supervisor. New curtain alterations require the availability of our seamstress. Unfortunately, repairs were not able to be made before your stay. As we only have four rooms, when they are occupied we are not able to move guests to other rooms.

We are happy to report that after Mardi Gras, we were able to paint the Lemelle room and hang our new curtains. Also, our shipment of Comphy sheets arrived. We hope you will come back and visit us again.

We stayed here for four nights after spending a few days in New Orleans. Breaux Bridge is a lovely, friendly town in the heart of Cajun country. Maison des Amis is not really a B & B as neither the owner nor staff lives in the small single-storey house along Bayou Teche. We never even saw the caretakers, but spoke to them a couple of times. The rooms are very comfortable, and there is a stocked fridge in the common room, as well as snacks- a very thoughtful touch. The rooms also have a television.
The gazebo along the bayou is a wonderful place to relax and watch the water go by.
Rooms include a voucher for breakfast at Cafe des Amis or Chez Madeline, both of which offer wonderful meals. The Zyedco breakfast at Cafe des Amis is not to be missed; it is a real blast.

As other reviews have said, not a B&B where you'll hang out with the owners and get travel tips. That was fine with us.

We decided to spend a Friday night in Breax Bridge specifically go to to the Cafe des Amis zydeco breakfast on Saturday. So the fact that we got breakfast there (I think it was up to $10/person value, which we went a bit over, but we ate very well and had mimosas!).

Great location for exploring Breaux Bridge. We spent the afternoon/early evening walking around town. Had dinner at Chez Jacqueline which was great. The B&B's breakfast vouchers are also good there, and I'm sure her breakfast is good too.

The B&B has a lovely backyard and a gazebo right on Bayou Teche. We enjoyed that quite a bit. Would like it even more when it wasn't so hot, I'm sure. It was July, after all.

It's true that this is not a traditional B&B where you're interacting with and guided by a host, but my fellow guest and I still loved this place. Room was completely charming and wonderfully decorated. The house has been restored and the location is terrific, right on the bayou with a wonderful gazebo for reading or lazing by the water and in the shadow of the picturesque bridge for which the town is named. The inn is just around the corner from the town's main street which has a few restaurants (below) and antique shops. There's an enclosed porch that leads to a mini-kitchen where the fridge was stocked with snacks (yogurt, granola) and where we made complimentary microwave popcorn each night. Both the breakfast locations were fabulous for food and just around the corner: Chez Jacqueline and Cafe de Amis--I wouldn't have traded them for a 'breakfast at the inn'! We also went back to the latter for dinner, where we met some friendly locals who gave us suggestions for the music and such over the next few days. A plug for Breaux Bridge: we traveled all around the Cajun prairie and to Lafayette for Mardi Gras celebrations. Without a doubt, this was the most charming place of them all. Other towns, while musically rich, seemed a bit stark. This town held the most potential for a visitor, I felt. We'll be back!

I admit the biggest attraction of a bed and breakfast is the opportunity to spend time with a host who is local and full of info and suggestions. In selecting the Maison Des Amis, you have to consider what type of guest you are. If you want service, someone to help carry luggage, directions around town and hotel security personnel, this is not for you. If old equals dirty and creaky in your mind, this is not for you. If instead you like independence, privacy, and being left to your own devices, this is a good choice. If you love old houses, a unique architectural style, and a bit of quirkiness, you'll be happy here. The owner is not in town and when we were there neither was the caretaker. When you make the reservations, you will receive written instructions via email and again at the Maison. Read them carefully and then verify the hours of the restaurants in town by phoning or stopping by while you explore the downtown. The restaurants locally-owned are independent and can close early if there are no tourists in town. Out on the highway are chain hotels and restaurants where you know exactly what you are getting because they are all alike. I admit it is a little strange to pick up a key, move in and be left to explore around the house and grounds by yourself. We were at Maison one night on our way to Texas. We discovered the gazebo on the Bayou Teche and from then on were very happy with Maison Des Amis. If we had more time, we would have spent an afternoon just sitting in the gazebo and watching the boats go by. Both of the restaurants that serve the free breakfast to guests are wonderful.

This place exemplifies the problem when the owner is no where - in this case out of state, I believe. Very nice and helpful manager (picked us up when we couldn't find the place) but is clearly not in the hospitality business nor anywhere to be seen after showing us our room. Bed is clean but everything around it kind of grungy and misplaced - (flags stored, closet full of surplus items of some kind, electrical wires kind of haphazard ) -- sort of like borrowing someone's bedroom; not what one expect in a B&B. Old beer containers from the weekend still in the hall garbage. Reservations are taken by anonoymous phone and information center not always accurate - i.e. we had wanted to have dinner Tuesday night at the supplsedly well-regarded restaurant but it was closed. Had a dispute as to whether we had been told it was open or not --This is the first place we have ever left before our departure date. No one around for information; not good information; and just not well-kept. Place needs a really good cleaning. One of the major guide books gives this a high rating --Don't believe it.

I speak to all potential guests and ensure the information they receive is correct. However, what do you do about guests that don't listen to the information? Our guests called Monday evening as they were lost in Breaux Bridge. Our housekeepers husband (Russell) drove to where they were located and had them follow him to the Maison. Russell showed the guests where to park , escorted them to their room, showed them the complementary soft drinks in the refrigerator, told them a Cajun band was at Mulates and that breakfast was being served at 7:30 at Chez Jacqueline or if they preferred they could use their breakfast coupons for lunch at the Cafe Des Amis. The guests wanted to go to the grocery store and Russell gave them directions. My phone rang at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. "We're checking out", the guest said. We came to eat at the Cafe Des Amis and it is not open on Tuesday and we went to breakfast at Chez Jacqueline and it is closed. I reiterated the message that the cafe was open for lunch and that the cafe would honor her coupons for lunch (which was the same information I told the guest when she made the reservation as she mentioned that she wanted to write a review on the cafe des amis.) I also stated that breakfast at Chez Jacqueline was at 7:30. (Jacqueline is closed on Tuesday, but will open for breakfast for a limited time when there are Monday night guests at the Maison. Jacqueline called me at 8:00 a.m. to say that this guest had not yet arrived. She would stay open as long as she could but she had a doctor's appointment at 9:15 a.m ). The guest's response to the information was "well then what do I do for dinner?" Before I had a chance to respond, the guests stated "that she wanted a refund for her second night as she was only staying because she was going to have dinner at the cafe". She then hung up the phone. The guest did not say anthing about the house to me. Her description of the guest room clearly indicates misrepresentation of the items in the room. The armoire contains hangers for guests' clothing, two terry cloth robes, extra pillows and blankets. Next to the armoire are two festival chairs (folded up and in sleeves); perhaps those are the "flags" she mentions in her write-up. As one can find a trail ride or festival almost every weekend insouthwest Louisiana, we provide chairs for our guests. As for the electrical wires, we have an end table on which the alarm clock, light and white noise machine sits, all plugged into a surge protector which is underneath the end table. One coke can and water bottle was in the trash; we provide early check-ins and late check-outs and guests often place trash in the kitchen trash bin after. housekeeping has emptied it. Two major guide books staff have recently stayed at the Maison and continue to give it a high rating.

We stayed here one night as we were touring around the area. It looked pretty, but the careful restoration of the place was totally spoilt by the attitude of the staff.

We were woken very early the following morning by the caretaker banging on our door and shouting for us to get up as he wanted to come in to use the connecting door in our room to get into the adjoining room. He wouldn't go away. It was actually quite scary as the guy isn't exactly friendly and he wouldn't say why he wanted to get in our room.

We only knew he was the caretaker as the previous evening we had returned from dinner to find him and two other caretaker-type staff in our room standing around drinking beers and allegedly fiddling with the TV (as far as I was aware there had been nothing wrong with it). Not very nice really, and very unprofessional.

Basically this place is like something out of Fawlty Towers in the way it is run. It's a shame.

Also the rooms are not all ensuite. And we asked for a second bed but was told we couldn't as they only had one spare and it was being used already. Customer service isn't their strong point.

  • Liked — it's a nice quaint house
  • Disliked — the staff trying to break into our room at dawn

I received a phone call at 8:00 a.m. that the guests in room 2 had parked illegally and their car would be towed if it was not moved immediately. Our caretaker tried to awaken the guests in room 2 by knocking on their door, however he was not able to awaken them. He then knocked on room 3's door to ask them if they could knock on the connecting door to awaken the guests in room 2 and explained the situation. The caretaker reported that the guests in room 3 were not happy that they he had awakened them and were not interested in helping the other guests. Later that day, the repairman came to fix the TV in room 3 as it was not working. Our repairmen are hardworking, professional men who always knock on the quest door first and only enter with the caretaker or housekeeper. Our repairmen work between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m and only drink coke or water while on the job. And our caretaker only drinks non acoholic beverages as he has a medical condition.
