“Ghastly Staff, Very bad experience”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2009

We stayed here one night as we were touring around the area. It looked pretty, but the careful restoration of the place was totally spoilt by the attitude of the staff.

We were woken very early the following morning by the caretaker banging on our door and shouting for us to get up as he wanted to come in to use the connecting door in our room to get into the adjoining room. He wouldn't go away. It was actually quite scary as the guy isn't exactly friendly and he wouldn't say why he wanted to get in our room.

We only knew he was the caretaker as the previous evening we had returned from dinner to find him and two other caretaker-type staff in our room standing around drinking beers and allegedly fiddling with the TV (as far as I was aware there had been nothing wrong with it). Not very nice really, and very unprofessional.

Basically this place is like something out of Fawlty Towers in the way it is run. It's a shame.

Also the rooms are not all ensuite. And we asked for a second bed but was told we couldn't as they only had one spare and it was being used already. Customer service isn't their strong point.

  • Liked — it's a nice quaint house
  • Disliked — the staff trying to break into our room at dawn

I received a phone call at 8:00 a.m. that the guests in room 2 had parked illegally and their car would be towed if it was not moved immediately. Our caretaker tried to awaken the guests in room 2 by knocking on their door, however he was not able to awaken them. He then knocked on room 3's door to ask them if they could knock on the connecting door to awaken the guests in room 2 and explained the situation. The caretaker reported that the guests in room 3 were not happy that they he had awakened them and were not interested in helping the other guests. Later that day, the repairman came to fix the TV in room 3 as it was not working. Our repairmen are hardworking, professional men who always knock on the quest door first and only enter with the caretaker or housekeeper. Our repairmen work between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m and only drink coke or water while on the job. And our caretaker only drinks non acoholic beverages as he has a medical condition.

A few weeks ago, my girlfriend and I were roadtripping through the deep south (yes, even with gas at $4.50 gallon) on our way to New Orleans when, on a whim, we decided to pull into Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, the "crawfish capital of the world." It turned out to be the best decision we made on the entire trip, largely because we happened to stumble into a stay at Maison des Amis, a beautifully restored old Creole home -- now converted to a bed and breakfast -- that has, among its many, many wonderful features:
-- An indoor and outdoor porch for sitting, drinking, reading and writing;
-- An expansive garden with a private gazebo right on the bayou (and located a mere 500 feet from the beautiful old bridge that gives Breaux Bridge its name);
-- Large, tastefully decorated rooms with comfy beds and suprising little amenities (e.g. a little device in each room that can be set to play the sound of rain, rivers flowing, white noise, etc.)
-- A voucher for breakfast at one of the FABULOUS restaurants in town. In fact, many people in Louisiana will tell you that Cafe des Amis is one of the best places to eat in the entire state. And there's also Chez Jacqueline, who's namesake owner is a wonderful chef with interesting stories to tell.
-- A sweet owner who, somewhat late at night, was able to guide two weary travelers to a restaurant located a few miles away (Pat's Fisherman's Wharf, which is a must stop for anyone visiting the area).
-- Very reasonable rates.

All in all, our stay at Maison des Amis and Breaux Bridge turned out to be the highlight of our entire trip (through nine states). If you ever have had fantasies about visiting Louisiana, eating crawfish, and listening to zydeco, this is the place to go. You won't regret it.

We had been to Breaux Bridge several times but had just found out about this B&B last year when we were there. We assumed it was closely associated with Cafe des Amis, because of the name and at the time it only mentioned that cafe as the breakfast host for the inn. Well, I booked us a room for one night as that was all that was available. We got in late because of the rain and a delayed flight. The envelope with the keys was on the room door, and all was in order but it did seem kind of strange not to see anyone there at all. It honestly appeared that there were no other guests, as a matter of fact. The room was nice, clean, but nothing extra. The claw foot tub had been reglazed and the finish was peeling off in areas. There was a small "rug pad" (looked like that non-slip shelf liner stuff) on the floor by the tub, sort of wrinkled up, but no rug on top of it. It gave the room a sleazy appearance, to be frank. I thought the bed was quite comfortable, if a bit dramatic in style, with the dark wood frame and extending canopy headboard.

But we really were okay with it all until morning, when we went to Cafe Jacqueline a little after 10 a.m., only to find a note on the cafe's door stating Jacqueline had gone to a doctor's appointment and so had to close early. There was no other restaurant in the immediate area open, so we went to the nice little coffee house around the corner, and had coffee and pastries, which were excellent, as always. When we got back to the room, the caretaker/housekeeper was there, so I mentioned the problem with the cafe. She insisted that breakfast was only served there until 10 a.m., and we had arrived a bit after. However, it did not mention that anywhere in the literature, only that the Cafe des Amis hours were limited (but they were closed on the day we were there). No matter how I tried to reason with her, the caretaker kept insisting it was clearly stated on the page she showed me, even though it said nothing about Cafe Jacqueline's hours. After a bit, I just gave up. I didn't expect a refund, but I did think it should be made clear in the future so that it might not happen again.

Well, it won't happen to us again, you can be certain. By the way, we stayed the next night in the Old Castillo B&B in St. Martinville, and for the same price, had a fabulous room and a scrumptious breakfast. All's well that ends well, right?

Excellent B&B - rooms were clean and well furnished (try and get Room 1 if possible). Location superb - just across the Bayou Teche bridge with a peaceful water facing gazebo just great for watching the river flow by.

Breakfast is included at the nearby Chez Jacqueline (excellent food (try the beignets) with a friendly proprietor) added to the overall enjoyment of this lovely low key cajun town.

We recently stayed in Breaux Bridge 4 nights from Thursday-Sunday at the Maison des Amis. The location was fantastic, within walking distance from downtown, antiques, boutiques, cafes, tourist information, etc. The grounds were beautiful, there was a gazebo right on the bayou. We ate a the Cafe des Amis restaurant right around the corner and the food was excellent, the Zydeco breakfast on Saturday morning was a real treat. The room was clean and bed was comfortable. The whole experience was very impersonal for a bed and breakfast. We never saw anyone except for the maid. Our keys and other information were left for us. There were many notes left on the porch and in our room with instructions of what not to do. The bathroom door broke and other minor repairs were needed. There was a mix-up with parking, different instructions written different places, but we did figure it out. The owner lives out of town and someone manages the property, maybe that is part of the problem. There were numbers to call, but we are the type who won't call unless we have to. I just felt that someone should have at least checked in with us. We did enjoy the town, the swamp tour with Norbert LeBlanc, eating at Cafe Jaqueline, great seafood at the Fruit Stand and sausage Pouche's. We would return to Breaux Bridge, but would probably not stay here again.

We stayed at the Maison des Amis for two nights on 29th and 30th May 05. We had room number 1 (of the 4 rooms) which is at the front of the house. The room was absolutely lovely, complete with stripped floorboards, half tester bed, antique furniture and roll top bath.

The house itself was completely renovated a few years ago and is typical creole clapboard style, complete with large garden and gazebo overlooking the Bayou. A word of warning - if you sit on one of the rocking chairs on the gazebo, I swear you will never leave - I ended up watching the squirrels on the opposite bank and the terrapins in the bayou for ages - I still don't know where the time went.

There is a fridge stocked up with complementary soft drinks and breakfast is provided by the renowned Cafe des Amis, just round the corner.

We were lucky enough to meet the owner, who was down from Washington DC and she set us up with a swamp tour on Lake Martin, with Mr Leblanc - this ended up being one of the highlights of the trip and I would recommend this to anyone else in the area.

Maison des Amis was an enchanting place to stay - exactly what we were looking for and I can't praise it highly enough
