Very interesting. Do not burn yourself. You need a shovel. We arrived and rented a shovel for $10 from the store at the edge. There is an area where everyone digs and so we found a hole we liked and began to dig it up again. The water when you dig deep is very hot. You can burn yourself. You have to have the right mixture of sea water coming in and then digging the hot water up. It is fun. My kids and I had fun doing this. It is unique and would go back.

Hot water beach is a must do NZ experience but it can get very busy in the summer. Here we are in winter so there wasn’t an overload of people and we had a great time building our pool. The water was really warm and lovely on a winters day. Excellent

This is fabulous. Nature's very own spa, all you need is a spade and a cool beverage to enjoy after digging and relaxing in the hot water hole on the beach

So they charge for parking now. Anyway, the beach itself isn't anything spectacular for New Zealand standards. It has sand and waves. Would be a great little spot for a summer surf or sunbathe, but no way should it be marked as a tourist attraction.

This is a great place to visit for the surreal natural experience. Imagine the wonder of a natural hot water spring just popping up out of pristine beach sands and running down to the wild surf of a southern pacific ocean shoreline.

Now, its a little off the beaten path, but easy enough to find. But, hey, we found it. You walk out of the car park and down the beach a bit. (See my first pic, the panorama one. The hot water area is in the right hand distance on that photo).

Look for a crowd all digging holes in the wet sand. Head to that area and dig your own natural spring spa, or channel a little of the hot spring water into your beach spa hole. Its a good idea to bring a fold-away shovel or something else to dig with. We planned on staying there for about an hours, we ended up staying 3.

IMPORTANT - BE AWARE: There are areas where the spring water is so hot it can scold/burn you very badly. There are usually signs up near this. I nearly broiled the souls of both my feet. So be careful, especially with your young ones.
